#12 - Jack vs. Fayed (season 6)

"Say hello to your brother."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8Ri_6rdOUXM

this is basically a copy of Jack vs. the Drazens from season 1, only with better action and a badass fight at the end. the downside is that it doesn't have pissed off Jack, but I'll take better action any day.

not much to say about this - the video pretty much says it all. this is probably my favourite Bauer kill. Fayed is a great villain, a guy with absolutely no remorse, and watching Jack take care of him is pretty awesome. the best part about this fight is Jack's face as he's hanging Fayed. it's like he's getting a sick, twisted joy out of this. it's the best "aww yeah you done got your ass whooped" face you could make. I love that.

I dunno, something about having a very human terrorist in Syed appealed to me. Plus, his name is ****ing AWESOME.

And I agree about Assad being wasted. He was my favourite terrorist ever when he bit the dust; I thought he might even be better than Marwan. Then he had to go down in a blaze of utter non-glory.

I admit, though, Fayed really did step it up after that. Probably my favourite 24 terrorist, actually. He has basically one character trait: ruthlessness. He's not a sadist, and he doesn't appear extremely committed to his cause. But he is one soulless, remorseless SON OF A *****.

That episode in its entirety kicked ass, BTW. From Wayne Palmer all the way up to Cheng Zhi. It even featured the classic season 1 voice where Jack yelled completely incoherently into the cell phone. That was a nice bonus for me. >>

The emotion that Jack brought into the battle with the Drazens was without comparison. That's what made it (probably) my favorite 24 moment.

I remember after seeing the first four hours, I made this comment:

"I hope Assad ends up as the end bad guy. it'll make Jack feel like crap about Curtis and Jack vs. Assad could be legendary."

That idea alone kicks the hell outta all the plotlines involving villains in S6. Why couldn't the writers think of that instead of you?!

#11 - "I SHOT HER ABOVE THE KNEECAP" (season 5)

"You make me shoot her again, she'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJwQNWzyivU

this scene is like the Hacksaw scene and the Lobell scene mixed into one. the result? it's equal parts hilarious and mesmerizing.

if there's one rule of 24, it's that Jack Bauer gets what he wants. at this point, Jack's pretty much done everything under the sun when it comes to interrogations and torture, so they keep having to improvise and pushing the envelope on what Jack Bauer is willing to do. by season 5, he's shooting innocent women in order to get what he wants.

Christopher Henderson is the exception to every rule Jack Bauer knows. he doesn't break, or even bend. he's relentless and there's nothing you can do to him to get him to talk. basically, he's an evil Jack.

"Tell him what he wants to know..."
"I can't."

when Henderson says this, everyone, including Jack, is taken back. Henderson is willing to let Jack torture his wife right in front of him before even thinking about speaking. this shocks Jack, and his response is almost as good as the line itself.

"You son of a *****. You don't care about anybody. Not even her."

at this point, you realize that Christopher Henderson is one hardcore dude, and Jack realizes that he's just not going to break Henderson no matter what he does.

#10: "Good for you, Jack." (season 5)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7YAVqnlHC8

Christopher Henderson vs. Jack Bauer had been a personal battle of who could get the best of each other for the entirety of season 5. Henderson gets the first strike when he tasers Jack, finds out what he knows and then locks him in a room to set off a bomb. Jack responds by capturing Henderson and shooting his wife above the kneecap. Henderson then kills Jack's best friend and escapes. Jack kills Henderson's men and retrieves the recording. finally, Henderson slices Audrey's artery and leaves her there to die if Jack doesn't give him the recording back.

"Hold it, Jack!"

this scene is the final showdown in a battle that's more personal than it is about terrorism. Henderson has killed or is responsible for killing just about all of Jack's friends.

"You weren't ever *really* gonna let me go, were you?"
"No."

the second that Henderson tries to shoot Jack, the battle of wits is over. Jack has won in the end, and a smile comes over Henderson's face.

"Good for you, Jack."

"You are responsible for the deaths of David Palmer, Tony Almeida, and Michelle Dessler. They were friends of mine."
"That's the way it works."

I don't think Jack ever had a more enjoyable kill than this one. at the very least, this one is up there with the Drazens and Nina.

The setting for that scene was incredible. Still dark out, just the two rivals on top of a lethal submarine.

Also, the most badass moment in that episode was when Jack drove a knife into that guard's throat after sneaking up on him. Just him growling, "We're clear!" sent shivers down my spine.

#9 - Tony to the rescue (season 4)

"Who are you calling?"
"The only person I can trust right now."

CTU is compromised and Jack barely avoids getting killed. (shock.) Jack and Audrey try to hold off the bad guys for as long as they can, but they ended up running out of ammo. the bad guys approach slowly, and at the last second get shot from behind.

Tony showing up isn't entirely unexpected - there's no way they were going to leave him in jail like that. Tony was too central a character to the last three seasons to simply write him out of the script like that. it really wasn't a surprise at all that it was Tony that Jack decided to call.

this scene being predictable doesn't change how awesome it is.

"Jack!
"Tony!"

simple, but oh-so-effective. goosebumps, every single time. Tony is back, and the run of my favourite single-season character in 24 history begins.

actually, I thought about that one yesterday.. it's one of my favourite moments from s1, just to see two awesome characters that you've been trailing for ~15 hours finally go face to face. it's really awesome.

that said, there's nothing noteworthy that happens in the scene and I'd be hard-pressed to actually find the scene on youtube, so I decided against including it. I love anything that puts the two of them in the same scene, though. anything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB453gFQDUM

I can't even think of anything to say here. this entire episode is amazing and Mason completely steals the show in these scenes, from how completely dead he looks to his little speech with Jack.

"You still have a life, Jack. You wanna be a real hero? Here's what you do. You get back down there and you put the pieces together. You find a way to forgive yourself for what happened to your wife. You make things right with your daughter, and you go on serving your country. That'd take some real guts."

no one went out with more of a bang than Mason.

People say Season 2 went downhill from the nuke. It certainly wasn't as memorable afterward, but I still thought it was extremely intense, what with Jack going against all authority once again, then having a behind-Tony's-back affair with Michelle, then SHUT UP MRS. PALMER.

#7 - Palmer authorizes Jack's execution (season 2)

"Mr. President, please. You don't need to say anything, sir. There was only one right choice to make and you made it."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6VXxLLKMrm8

Jack Bauer is personally responsible for preventing Palmer's death. twice, actually. David Palmer owes Jack Bauer his life and he is very, very aware of this. David Palmer respects Jack Bauer more than anyone else.

which is why this scene is so amazing.

Nina knows that Jack will hunt her down if she gets immunity. he hates her that much. when she asks to be pardoned for the murder of Jack Bauer, Palmer's head nearly swings right off. you can tell right there how he feels about Jack. if this were anybody else, trading a life for a nuclear bomb going off would be an easy choice, but this is the man who saved his damn life.

and Jack, knowing the stakes, urges him to accept her deal.

Palmer is a rational man. he knows that this is his only choice, but he goes and double-checks just in case. Jack means that much to him. Palmer then struggles to get the words out of his mouth.

"You will be pardoned in advance for the murder of Jack Bauer."

the best part of this line is Jack's reaction. he just kind of smiles and puts his head down, like "well, crap." Jack's pretty humble, but even he knows that the country owes him a heck of a lot.

"Jack, is there anything you want me to do?
"Please make sure my daughter is safe."

this is the line that just breaks Palmer. you can see it in his face - it just kind of crumbles. he's authorizing the murder of the man who saved his life. Jack has to encourage him to even go through with it. there's only one thing Palmer can say before breaking into tears.

"Sorry, Jack."

I tend not to overthink 24. if Jack's in trouble, I don't say 'well, he's going to live obviously, this is BS' unless there's some downtime to think about it.

like season 6's opening, for example -- not that you know it!

I think the Mason/nuke scene was the only "lol Jack's gonna die" scene that I didn't care that I knew he would live. I knew Mason was gonna sub in for him in the end, but during the phonecall to Kim and him taking off in the place, I completely forgot about knowing that.

#6: Jack's phone call with Kim (season 2)

"...how are you getting off the plane?"
"I'm not, sweetheart."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=NnsNyzBDVdc

by my count, the following happens to Kim in season 2:

- gets attacked by her employer
- gets nearly arrested for kidnapping
- steals Megan from the hospital
- steals her employer's car
- gets pulled over and arrested for murder
- causes a car accident that almost kills the other two people in the car
- gets trapped and stalked by a cougar
- ends up in a creepy guy's house for the night
- has to chase off a creepy guy while hitchhiking
- gets involved in a liquor store robbery
- gets re-arrested, is let go
- returns to her employer's house at 5am (wtf?) and kills him in self-defence

and none of it has anything to do with the plot. Kim Bauer's plotline in season 2 is the worst idea in 24 history. it's just pointless. Kim Bauer is in season 2 for two reasons:

- to see how she's adjusting to her mom being dead;
- this scene.

I like this scene more than Mason's. Kim's reaction is classic and perfect: she's thinking about herself, like always.

""Dad, no! No! You can't do this to me!"

Jack's calm and peaceful, just like he always is when dealing with his family. he seems at peace with the world when Kim or Teri is involved. Kim is absolutely hysterical, and her reaction is completely warranted. she's about to lose her dad, and it really hits you hard.

Mason's speech >>>>>>> Kim's phone call

It's so hard to take Kim seriously after S1. I was watching some of S3 last night, and just as the Delta Force was about to attack and get the virus away from Nina/Amador, Kim bursts in and pulls Tony aside. For what you ask? Because Chloe's baby isn't actually Chloe's baby. Ugh...

#5 - "Is there anything else, Charles?" (season 5)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7glc1HbK9Y

Aaron Pierce is a quiet, honest man. I guess you'd call him a "good man". he doesn't say much, he talks slowly and thoughtfully, and he'll tell you straight how it is. he's very candid, mostly because his job requires it of him.

Aaron's not afraid to do what he feels is right. earlier in the season, Aaron and Jack went and faced the president straight-up about Walt Cummings, and Aaron overrode the phone lines and barricaded the door. Aaron Pierce is one of those familiar faces that you're always glad to see. he's the only guy in 24 that just keeps on coming back, against all odds.

when Pierce is caught and grabbed by Logan's men, you figure the worst was coming. he's beaten and bruised when Logan comes to see him. Logan offers him a great deal: to reassign him anywhere he wants if he agrees to shut up. Pierce stares at Logan and delivers my single favourite quote:

"“There is nothing that you have said or done that is acceptable to me in the least. You’re a traitor to this country and a disgrace to your office. And it’s my duty to see that you’re brought to duty for what you’ve done. Is there anything else, Charles?

every single word hits Logan hard, especially the last one. Aaron Pierce is a very respectful man. the fact that he refused to call Logan "Mr. President" says more than any insult could. Logan is not used to being disrespected. he's a weak man, a cowardly man. after Pierce nails him with these words, he stares him down. Logan can do nothing but look away, put his head down and walk out of the room. no one stands up to Logan like this.

Aaron Pierce did.
