Yeah, I'm sure it wasn't as bad as my memory says it was, but they did
make a lot of poor character-related decisions that, if reversed (see
Logan, Assad, Audrey) could have made the whole thing a lot better. =\ --- The theme of this time is "TRIP THE DEEP." Have a fascination for your cybermind. We can fly away... |

God, I ****ing loved that scene. The scene itself was utterly flawless
from crown to toetop, even though the first 2/3 or so of the episode
weren't nearly so good. The only problem I had with it was that I watched it with a group of friends, and they were all complaining about how much the season sucked before the scene. That scene itself really shut them all up, and when it ended, I left basically in total silence. I remember that one of my friends started to whine after that and I just snapped at him to shut up or I would kick him out of my car. Like, overall, Season 6 had a lot of weaker episodes. But none of that should have detracted from the indescribable feeling of that confrontation. --- Gandhi loved you, and look what happened to Gandhi. |

Also: I really want 5x24 and 4x24 to be the top two, but I think that
would be asking for a lot. This list is already all sorts of win. ... Well, what list of 24 isn't? I guess that was kinda redundant. >> --- Gandhi loved you, and look what happened to Gandhi. |

#2: "I just don't think you're fit to be the First Lady." (season 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXDmCKfqj7k http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCmUkEFcdg0 Sherry Palmer is a fantastic antagonist. day 1 is all about Sherry Palmer going from bad to worse to worst. becoming Mrs. President is more important to her than anything else, and nothing will get in her way. she'll cover up murders. she'll look the other way if someone needs to be eliminated. and in this case, she'll sacrifice an innocent girl to protect her husband's political campaign. David Palmer has had enough. "You just couldn't wait to leak it to the press, could you? It was you. What were you thinking?" "They already knew." "Dammit Sherry, the way you keep defying me!" "I am not defying you David, I am protecting you!" PROTECTING ME FROM WHAT ~~!! it's the single greatest second in 24, the moment we've waited for all season. David Palmer finally sees Sherry for the disgusting, manipulative, out-of-touch-with-reality, power-obsessed cretin that she is. David Palmer stands up to her and shows her who's in charge. Sherry Palmer jumps back in fear, sensing that she's finally gone too far. "Damn you, if that child dies...!" David Palmer then launches a vase just to show who's wearing the pants here. Sherry is left there panting, scared for her life. later, David goes to talk to Sherry. "After tonight, I don't want to see you again." "David.." "Sherry, please. I've heard it all before. And I don't care what this may do to my candidacy. And it's not because I don't want to be President -- I do -- I just don't think you're fit to be the first lady." Sherry Palmer is left reeling. she's not even offended by being dumped or losing her husband of 20 years. she's pissed because she no longer has a free ticket to the White House. she's no longer Mrs. President like she's been dreaming of every day for however long. her power has been stripped from her, and with it she has no way to define herself. she is lost. and every 24 fan does a fistpump because of it. --- xyzzy "hello." -neonreaper |

Indeed, every 24 danced like all **** that moment. So, as I progress further into Season 3, I'm realising that all 3 major characters who died - Nina, Sherry, and Chapelle - were at their best in Season 3. I actually like Chapelle and Sherry this season. --- Gandhi loved you, and look what happened to Gandhi. |

Relatedly, do you guys remember the first episode, where David is first informed of the accusations of Keith? Sherry: David, since when do we not talk about things? (David just slowly closes the door without looking at Sherry) --- Gandhi loved you, and look what happened to Gandhi. |
transience | Posted 7/27/2007 2:30:46 PM | message detail | #263 |
I remember thinking to myself after season 3: "you know, this is a convenient season. every antagonistic character dies while no real important good guys do. Michelle's all right, Tony survives being shot, Jack's okay, even Chase survives. meanwhile, we get rid of Chappelle. (he's cool at the end of 3, but for the entirety of 1 and 2 he's just a by-the-book obstacle.) we get rid of Sherry. we even get rid of Nina, though she's certainly not a bad character. all in all, this was a good season for deaths." --- xyzzy "hello." -neonreaper |

#1: Paul Raines, unluckiest man alive (season 4) "I already have a patient." "You have a new one." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qya73eNM0no Paul Raines had a pretty horrible day. his ex-wife that he still cares about gets kidnapped. he finds out the person who rescued her was her boyfriend that he didn't know about. then, his name comes up as being connected with the terrorists and Jack tortures him. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFB9sI2zYuI) then he decides to come along to help Jack, gets tortured and ends up saving Jack's life by taking a bullet for him. Jack tortures the guy, Paul saves his life. Jack's repayment is this scene. without Li Jong, CTU has no leads. they're pretty much screwed. a nuclear weapon will kill hundreds of thousands of people. "If I walk away from Mr. Raines now, he *will* die." "You don't know that for sure." Audrey is so scared at this point, she's speechless. she's already confirmed that she's going to go back to whereever with Paul. she clearly cares about him, and seeing Jack do all the questionable things he has to do to stop a terrorist attack has really shell-shocked her. Paul Raines is a quiet businessman that cares about her. Jack Bauer is a monster. "Jack. JACK." "I have my orders, I'm doing my job. I'm sorry." "You're *sorry*? You're letting him die! Jack, he saved your life!" Audrey is hysterical, and completely understandably. even Jack is rattled. Jack fights to save his life as hard as he can, but he can't do anything. even after it's clear that Paul is gone, Jack will not give up. he refuses to believe that the man that saved his life is gone. when Curtis stops him, Jack freaks out, his face is utterly confused. it takes Audrey about five seconds to even grasp that Paul is dead, and another ten to realize what horrible thing Jack just did. and when she does, it's brutal. "You son of a ****, Jack, you son of a *****, you killed him! He saved your life! How could you! You killed him. I HATE YOU JACK." and for the first time since Teri's death, Jack is completely responseless. he can't defend himself. he can't even react. he is completely floored by what just happened. his girlfriend hates his guts and the man who saved his life is dead because of him. Jack's face says it all. the next minute after this scene is pretty telling - Jack can barely even talk. he's completely destroyed. and it's thanks to his decision that the nuclear warhead will eventually be found. --- xyzzy "hello." -neonreaper |

My favorite part of that scene might be Jack's reaction when Curtis
pulls him away from Paul. He's totally freaked out, and he just can't
bring himself to accept that he can no longer save him. Totally tragic
scene. --- The theme of this time is "TRIP THE DEEP." Have a fascination for your cybermind. We can fly away... |

1. Jack vs. Drazens Easy choice for #1. I lost sleep over it. Jack blasting away on the docks kept playing in my mind for hours. 2. Nina is the mole 3. I SHOT HER ABOVE THE KNEECAP! 4. Shooting Curtis/Nuke 5. You're not fit to be the first lady --- ~Jacksonville Jaguars~ |

trannyscience | Posted 7/27/2007 10:32:53 PM | message detail | #286 |
that's one of the most unrealistic parts of the Nina twist. that and
the fact that she was skeptical of people taking Teri at the safe
house. Nina may be dedicated to her cause, but dedicated enough to get
shot to keep her cover? I always found that really unbelievable, maybe even moreso than some of the ridiculous plotlines in later seasons. --- xexyz |

I'm up to #6 and it's a good list so far, though personally I can't
imagine George Mason's heroicness and Jack/Henderson on the submarine
being anything but the top two. (The submarine showdown clinched season
5 > 1 > others for me, the whole scene was great.) --- ahh yeah Gallade and Gardevoir. Diamond FC: 3522 8952 1462 (Nadia) |

plus the last half of 5-24 was really predictable. the second Martha
starts going YOU SOLD NERVE GAS TO TERRORISTS you knew what was up
there, and then the super happy ending followed by the mysterious phone
call made you know something was gonna happen there. the only good
stuff in 5-24 is when Jack confronts Logan. by the way, I want to know how Jack goes from kidnapping a president to being released in 30 minutes --- xyzzy "hello." -neonreaper |

Obviously they released him when it was clear that Logan was in fact
corrupt, I guess. The Attorney General had Logan taken out pretty fast;
he must also have let Jack out simultaneously. I really liked the entirety of that episode, though. Like, it really made you remember just how the day began. There's that amazing shot of the casket, Logan giving the speech, and the sun rising. Also, Cheng is awesome. >> --- Gandhi loved you, and look what happened to Gandhi. |

Nina may be dedicated to her cause, but dedicated enough to get shot to keep her cover? I always found that really unbelievable, maybe even moreso than some of the ridiculous plotlines in later seasons. You're telling me she had a choice? Jack had a gun pointed at her the whole time. If she resisted, he'd have to shoot her anyway. She did the best thing she could in her position: don't resist and hope your boss will find a way to keep you alive. And Gaines was probably my favorite 24 villain after Nina and Henderson. I enjoyed the whole blackmail plot in the first half of S1, and he was funny and I loved his sarcasm. --- ~Jacksonville Jaguars~ |
