Wow, that was nuts. So Yuri fused with that god that Dehuai called down with the Reverse Demon Invocation? That was crazy.

The Kirlsa Training Facility, the whole sequence of riding the dumb turtle things in that cave are the two areas that immediately spring to mind. But that game as a whole had horrible, generic dungeons that are the standard for tri-Ace.

Update time. Just saved the game right outside of Prague. I'm looking forward to Europe after all the time in Asia -- Europe > Asia.

-- I hated that I had to go through those trials in the Temple Ruins. When Zhuzhen told the kid to take us directly to Master Xifa, I was like "oh yes," but then the cat turned human had to go and be like "lol no u gotta do trials aww yeah." Needless to say...

-- The Temple Ruins weren't too bad, though. I had no idea what in the world I was doing, so I was just running around warping into different colored portals and eventually finding myself at the very end. The suckiest part was when Yuri had his Fusions stripped from him. He's still a physical monster without them, but that's just no fun. Surprisingly, I thought Alice and Margarete were the easiest of the trials. They seemed shorter with less severe enemies.

-- Once through the Ruins, the group has a talk with Master Xifa, then Dehuai takes control of the little kid, causes some explosion, then steals Alice. oh no u didnt old man

-- After that, Master Xifa uses the last of his strength warp the group out of the collapsing ruins. Yuri wakes back up in Shanghai, and then goes to see Kawashima. The two have a pretty heated argument, and Yuri says he's tried of being used by people when it's convenient, and that planning out every little detail of life just isn't how he rolls. aww yeah yuri

-- Somewhere in between all this, I end up fighting Wugia twice. Wugia sucks. He isn't hard, but he's just a little pissant that pops up seemingly at random from time to time to get beat down. I mean, he's been getting his ass kicked for a good 15 years now. You'd figure he'd give up...

-- The next scene was with Lieutenant Suketani in his room, or wherever it was, saying he finally hid some object away. That's when Major Kusurgi (I think that's his name; it's something with a K) comes in with two Japanese soldiers and says he's currently under question for lying about the location of Kawashima. He doesn't tell where she's at, then the Major leaves and you can hear the gunfire from the Japanese soldiers that stayed behind. Crazy stuff. This game is all business all the time. And I love it.

-- After getting the Ywanga Gate Key and saving Kawashima from some guards, Yuri and co. head out to face Dehuai. That tower was pretty simple, although it did have some pretty hard hitting enemies. Matching up all the pieces in their correct spots didn't take long. Soon enough, I made it up to Dehuai, who had just finished sucking all of Alice's life energy out of here. There's a quick boss battle here, but between Yuri's Inferno Fusion (holy crap that thing rocks with Fighting Spirit [18%+ boost to physical attack = win]), Margarete's Snipe, and Zhuzhen's Life Sucker, he went down without too much problem.

-- He runs away saying it's too late to stop it, then Yuri ends up freeing Alice, who seems incapable to fight any further. Then -- behold -- the mysterious voice appears and says some cryptic stuff, shines a bring light, and voila! Alice is healed! You rock, Mysterious Voice !!

-- The fight with Dehuai on top of his tower was...argh. That was the hardest boss battle in the game so far. Crimson Flame can go die. I'm pretty sure Zhuzhen and Alice were both constantly healing there while Yuri pounded away. I think the battle ended up taking something like 15 minutes because of all the healing I had to do. The worst was when he started skipping my characters' turns and getting in successive Crimson Flames. That just sucked. There was a time there when I thought I was going to end up dying -- and this was toward the end of the fight, which would have been terrible.
ZFS | Posted 5/6/2007 7:14:06 PM | message detail | #169
-- After getting beaten down, Dehuai tries to make his little Invocation happen with the last of his strength, but ends up failing to do so. But, of course, that's not the end of it, because old Roger Bacon (lol albert simon) comes to join in the festivities and makes sure to give it the little nudge it needs to get going. That's when Yuri starts charging forth, ignoring the cries of Alice to not fuse with the god, but he ends up taking control of it, or at least I think he got it under control there at the end. During all this, Bacon is talking to himself in a little bubble at tea time in London. Shanghai is getting blown to pieces and he's just like "Hm. Most Impressive!" Crazy old Englishmen.

Apparently, Yuri just went off somewhere, too, because I don't have him in my party right outside Prague. Just Alice and Zhuzhen. But yeah, that's the update. This game is so damn awesome.

KleenexTissue50 | Posted 5/6/2007 7:24:16 PM | message detail | #171
Yeah, once you hit Europe you're about halfway through. Europe is actually a bit longer than Japan, I think.

None of the dungeons here on out are too bad until the final one which is kinda annoying.

ZFS | Posted 5/6/2007 7:31:45 PM | message detail | #172
The dungeons have been low on annoyance so far -- none of them really great, either -- so that's good to hear.

The only other couple of things I want to make sure I get here are Amon, whenever that becomes possible, and then the bad ending (if there's something like Covenant where you have to choose or whatever, you guys can just tell me which option when I get near to it if that's how it is).

KleenexTissue50 | Posted 5/6/2007 7:33:53 PM | message detail | #173
I wouldn't worry about the endings here. The bad ending is default, and unlike Covenant, you actually need to try in order to get the good ending. Requires some side-quest stuff.

ahh, good stuff.

- did you like the penis dudes in Kuihai Tower? best bad guys ever, am I right?

- I'm convinced your translation is either different than mine or that every one of you misspell words. it's Wugui in mine, not Wugia. eh, not a big deal. it's also the Yuwang key or something like that.

- did you get the erotic book in Kuihai Tower? if not, no big.. well, unless you plan on 100%ing the game.

- fights go a lot faster once you hit Europe and you get l2 fusions. all attacks = battle over. great way to level, too.

- yay europe -- love some of SH1's dungeons, they're simple and to the point, and they have fights that are simple to clear. really love a couple that are coming up. Blue Castle is a cool dungeon excepting the huge stairwell to Yuri.

-- Six months passed since Yuri tried to fuse with the Seraphic Radiance. Alice and Zhuzhen have been making ends by doing exorcisms for people. A guy from Bistritz comes into the town looking for them saying that his town has been getting attacked by monsters. Alice and Zhuzhen, of course, accept the job and head out. When the guy leaves, he ends up getting killed by some old hag -- this ended up being a lot sadder than it might seem, too.

-- When they arrive at the town, they go to the shop his family ran and break the news to his wife and daughter that he got killed. The sketchy Mayor named Kevin and dressed in red (omg xenosaga argh get out of here shion's lover) comes in and tries to console them when he hears the news.

-- Heading off the Blue Castle, I got a new character to join the crew -- Keith Valentine. He is much cooler than his brother. Love his attacks in battle, too.

-- It turns out Kevin -- that name is forever tainted after this encounter, too -- was using OMG BLACK MAGIC HAX to summon the monsters to the town. It was all for his research on vampires, and Terry, the father of the family, was helping him up until the point with the monsters. So Kevin steals Nina's mother (the kid) and says to bring the GOLD DUST if she wants her back.

-- One scrubby fight against a dog demon later, he's killed and the monsters are gone. But, now Keith wants to get Alice and Zhuzhen's help to exorcise a demon living at the top of the Blue Castle. He says he has the appearance of human, but can transform into strange monsters. Sounds like Yuri to me!

-- The fight against Yuri was pretty easy, mostly because his attacks were confined to one character, although he hit like crazy (one hit was almost enough to take out any character). With Alice always healing, and then using Bat Dance and Corpse Arm, he went down after many turns.

-- The following scene with Alice heading into Yuri's soul was probably has been my favorite in the game. She talks to those masks, who each embody a certain aspect of his soul. They tell her that he doesn't want to go on living, and he wants to join with his mother and father in death, and escape the suffering. She isn't having that, and essentially says that she loves him. They open the "Gate to Self" and let her go through.

-- Inside, Yuri is digging his grave. Alice yells at him to stop, then the Fox Face appears. He says that he's the manifestation of Yuri's weakness, everything he's afraid of and such. She tries to stand up to him, but he punches her in the face, which about makes Yuri snap. He gets punched around, then stands up again to fight him. As long as he's alive, he can keep going, no matter how much punishment he takes. Really easy fight against Fox Face occurs after that.

That about covers the most important bits. Once I got back to Prague, someone says that Margarete left a message about being in Rouen, most likely going after Roger Bacon (lol albert simon). Then there's some strange sequence in the bathroom with Alice where she fights against the old lady from before. Curing and then using Blessed Light took care of that. The next stop is off to Rouen.

They are, by far, the strangest things I've faced in a game in a long time.

- I'm convinced your translation is either different than mine or that every one of you misspell words. it's Wugui in mine, not Wugia. eh, not a big deal. it's also the Yuwang key or something like that.

I'm not sure. I thought it was Wugui, but a FAQ says it's "Wugai," which seems closer to yours.

SH1 Europe > SH2 Japan > SH1 Asia > SH2 Europe

SH1 Europe and SH2 Japan are really close though. I really love cd2 of SH2.

I kinda think of SH1 as two cds as well -- it even has the little Shadow Hearts logo after the whole Seraphic Radiance / tea scene, and when it's over you're on a different continent. so congrats, you're on cd2!
