Time to keep playing through Shadow Hearts because it's so awesome. (Part 2!)

Coincidentally, I am just entering the Nementon Monastery. Brings back memories of Koudelka, at least until the actual dungeon starts....

No, I've just been playing it for a long time. It takes me damn near forever to actually beat games, since I play so many concurrently. And I actually ventured into the dungeon once before, but forgot to clear up malice beforehand and the damn masks killed me.

Speaking of the last dungeon, is Yuri/Alice/Halley at 34/34/32 a decent party? Alice is just awesome and I feel compelled to use Halley because of Koudelka, and he's got okay healing as a bonus.

the last boss will pretty much whomp you at those levels. I think mid-40's is a good spot?, though you may gain a lot of that while trying to get there.

at the very least, re-visit the Orphanage after you've entered the last dungeon and get another crucifix. and make sure you have loads of healing items.

Even in his bubble, he has to hold onto that hat so it doesn't get blown away!

Kato's chin stands inconquerable even in death -- "Behold. I'm big and manly, *****." It'd totally knock that hat right off Albert's old head.

though if you're only at Nemeton, you should be all right. if you want fast exp, talk to.. Joshua?, in the London Rats hideout and get the Oath Grail and kill some masks. you'll level like crazy. just be sure to fight them in the right order.

don't worry, as long as you don't examine the small gravestone in the graveyard at the perfect time, you won't have to worry about the good ending.

yeah, you are overlevelled if anything. but that's how you've always been!

if you don't do any sidequests or anything, you should be at a good spot come the last boss.

Yep, Asylum is amazing. Do you see how, despite being technically worse at EVERYTHING, SH can keep up with soley atmosphere and story? Cardinal Albert SImon is amazing.

I like them fine. the last dungeon has a crappy section to it, but otherwise it's pretty nifty.

the only "complaint" could be the final boss which, like SH2, is a step and a half harder than the rest of the game.

Yeah. The story and atmosphere in Shadow Hearts are really something else. Story-wise, I've enjoyed SH1 a bit more than SH2. I'd probably give SH1 music, too, because there have been some amazing songs in the game. Right now, I'd say SH2 is still safely ahead of SH1, but I'll wait until seeing the ending here before saying for sure.

Heh. It seems like this game has been a lot longer than the 14 hours I've put into it so far.

Dammit, I just got a Game Over in Nemeton without even noticing what the attack was. Guess I should equip some Leonardo's Bears...

I haven't played Covenant yet, of course, but between Koudelka and Shadow Hearts I actually liked the atmosphere of Koudelka more. The story of Koudelka was smaller in scope, but I think I like it more as well. The gameplay of Koudelka doesn't even *begin* to compare with Shadow Hearts, though.

trannyscience | Posted 5/7/2007 7:35:59 PM | message detail | #273
yeah, I've heard Koudelka is all story and atmosphere and no gameplay. SH1 is a nice balance in that department, at least compared to Koudelka, and then SH2 just takes over in the gameplay department.

Thinking about this, the whole series seems to become more gameplay focused with each successive game. Now, Covenant had a great story, I thought, but it's a huge leap from SH1 in gameplay, which is apparently a leap from Koudelka, and then SH3 is supposed to be a jump up from SH2, but with a...uh... I guess "decent" story (I don't know, I haven't played it, but no Yuri seems like a bad thing)

(I don't know, I haven't played it, but no Yuri seems like a bad thing)

It's not too hard to get past. It didn't take me too long and I am the biggest Yuri fanboy ever.

SH3 is a not as good as either of it predecessor but its worth playing, for sure.

ZFS | Posted 5/7/2007 8:35:22 PM | message detail | #279
Eh, most of the appeal to me of the series is Yuri. Not saying that a lack of him makes FtNW no good, but there's almost zero interest there with me. I'll probably try it out sometime down the road, but no immediate desire to go looking for it any time soon.

It'd probably be worth trying if only for the fact that's it supposedly has the best gameplay in the series, and considering how fun it is in SH1 and SH2, that could only be a good thing.

Yep. Arc may just be the most broken thing I've run across in a long time, because that battle was a cake with that skill.

Final talk with Albert Simon is amazing. WAIT! Before you go, go to France. On the first floor of the inn, there is a door that was previously locked. Return to it, and go through to talk to the weapon guy there. You see Kawashima's end. Its completely optional, too.

Final dungeon is arg blah annoying due to the three lame-ass bosses that you need to fight before getting to Simon.

Simon's fairly tough too if you don't come packing 3 crucifixes.

yeah, let me help out.

- enter the final dungeon and exit. hit up the Orphanage. play this stupid hide and seek game and then play lottery with the kid to get a crucifix.

- once you warp out, I think you can talk to Roger for Yuri's ultimate weapon. hope you've got ring skills.

- buy a TON of hp/mp/sp items. you will need them. you can also upgrade your weapons with your excess money.

- Arc is so awesome.

it's not long so much as the last boss takes forever unless you've got some levels. if you don't have crucifixes it's even worse. you'll get one off a miniboss on the way there, so all you need is one more.
