Oh, and I totally cheesed my way through that final boss fight. The fight was over in four turns. I'll outline how it went. Turn 1 God -- Time of Judgment. Yuri -- Fuse into Amon; use Monkey Paw (triple attack power, Ring becomes irregular) Alice -- Arc Zhuzhen -- Gold Hourglass Turn 2 God -- Yellow Abyss Yuri -- Use Silver Hand (hit area becomes 100%) Alice -- Arc Zhuzhen -- Mana Root on Alice Turn 3 God -- Physical attack on Alice Yuri -- Seventh Key (500 first hit; 300 second/third hit) Zhuzhen -- Thera Extract on Alice Alice -- Mana Root on Yuri Turn 4 God -- Dark Abyss Yuri -- Seventh Key God: "ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH" --- "Called 'Godslayer' by some; feared by most -- Yuri Hyuga." |

I thought about using that one, too. I ended up just going with the
Monkey Paw, though. I wasn't expecting him to be dead after two Seventh
Key's, but I guess 42 hits in two turns is hard to live through. I was
ready to bust out the Fifth Key if he wasn't dead after that turn, too.

Yeah. Part of the problem -- not that they weren't enjoyable, mind you
-- with SH2's cast is that they're just sort of there, except for
Karin. They'd all have their little segments there and then they'd
almost disappear for a long time while Yuri took over the show.
"Entertaining," or more
entertaining, is probably the best way to describe them. But I thought
the cast in SH1 was a lot more balanced. They were entertaining at
times, but they also had a fair bit more prominence in the grand scheme
of things. Both are great, I think, but SH1 takes it for the game not putting such a heavy focus on just Yuri. --- "Called 'Godslayer' by some; feared by most -- Yuri Hyuga." |

agreed - however, I think Yuri is deep/strong enough on his own to
carry an entire game. it's not like SH2 gets boring because you're

Zhuzhen and Margarete are fairly prominent.. certainly moreso than

No doubt about that. Yuri is an amazing
character, and he's more than enough to make that game great all by
himself. Characters could have come and gone as Yuri traveled around

I fail to see the point in Keith, Zhuzhen, and Margarette. At least,
they're nowhere near as prominent as their SH2 counterparts. Keith didn't really have much to contribute outside of the Blue Castle, but Margarete and Zhuzhen were pretty prominent throughout the entire story. Margarete had a bit there where she'd disappear from time to time, but come on, compared to Lucia? Zhuzhen was there from pretty much the beginning until the end. Gepetto would oftentimes not say anything for so long that when he did say something it was like "holy crap old man where did you come from." Let's see here. My favorite part of the game was probably the part where Alice helps Yuri stand up to Fox Face. I loved that -- Fox Face punches Alice, Yuri is like "oh hell no you didnt," and then he beats his "weakness." Great stuff right there. I'd give an honorable mention to Yuri telling Alice about how if he failed to protect her would be the day he'd die (the sequence where he recalls the night his mother died) and -- wait for it, wait for it -- SHLOOOOOOOOP. God bless you, Sea Mama. My least favorite part was trying to get Amon. Holy **** that Nemeto Ruins sucked ass. Major ass. Never want to do that again ass. As far as a scene, I'm not sure there was one I disliked. For areas -- SH1 Europe > SH2 Asia > SH2 Europe > SH2 Russia > SH1 Asia. That looks like that I hate SH1 Asia, but I loved it. aww yeah sh1 europe love you hated Nemeton? really? I enjoy it. Oh, and my favorite "dungeon" of the game was probably the Mental
Hospital, with the Orphanage close behind. There was something about
those two areas that I really liked. Probably the fact that they
weren't too big, had just the right amount of "puzzles," and had some
good scenes. The entire sequence with Alice and Zhuzhen saving that one town right after Yuri tries to fuse with the Seraphic Radiance was great, too. To put it all together, I think Shadow Hearts was a fantastic game. Not the best
I've played (certainly up there, though), but it probably does have the
best (or at least my favorite) story. If you could take SH2's technical
superiority (graphics, gameplay, etc.) and apply them to Shadow Hearts,
I don't think there'd be another game even close to being as good.
Perhaps more than anything else, I would have liked to see the great
voice acting that was in Covenant put into SH1. That would have
increased my liking of the game that much more, I think. Oh, and even though the gameplay was a step back in that it was really basic, I did like that characters learned skills at certain levels. There's something about how each of them is unique in what they offer that I find more appealing than just giving any character magic. Crests were fine in Covenant, don't get me wrong, but I prefer how it was done in SH1. Everything else, though, was a huge step in the right direction in Covenant. I guess one of the few things I might have complained out loud about was how long the battles lasted. It seemed like once you started getting toward the end, boss battles were just dragging on due to how much HP they all had. Once you get Arc, it's really easy to keep battles under complete control, so you're never in danger of losing, or having to worry about it and getting all anxious; instead, you just sort of chill and pound away on a boss that has something like 5000+ HP when you're doing ~350 with your strongest character. It just takes forever. I know I cheered inside everytime you see a boss go into that "oh god oh god oh god im about to die" animation. Shadow Hearts was a great, great game. I wasn't actually expecting to like it nearly as much as I did. I was just playing through it to get more details about the story that was touched on every now and then in Covenant. I didn't expect to find that all of those remarks about the atmosphere would help add so much more to the game -- nor did I expect to find that its story was top of the line! Between both games, I don't think there's a setting in any game that I enjoy more, or a cast of characters that are more entertaining. Yuri alone absolutely smashes most games' entire casts. He's such a well developed, round, dynamic character that if I hear anyone on this board being all like "lol games dont have good characters" I'm going to e-punch them in their e-faces. But yeah, as a whole, it's not as good as Covenant, but it's still a hell of a game. I thoroughly enjoyed playing through both of them. Without that tranny topic, I would have never played these -- and that would have just been criminal. :O --- "Called 'Godslayer' by some; feared by most -- Yuri Hyuga." |
