Oh, in every technial aspect, Covenant is a better game, SH1 is like a
high end PS1 game.. because wasn't it supposed to be for PS1? Graphics
aren't great, no voice acting, battle system is nothing compared to
aCovenenat. SH1 is better (In my mind) because it has such a great,
dark atmosphere (Asylum was just creepy) and a villain that doesn't
make you sit at your screen for five minutes thinking "...You're

The plan is to play the first after the second, just because the first
is much harder to find and I already have the second here with me. I'll probably put in an hour or so later tonight after I get back to the movies. Screw you guys and your SH1. Okay. I managed to put in about an hour of playing tonight (or at least I'm typing this in the middle of the night so I don't forget too much by tomorrow afternoon, when will be the next time I'll be able find time to get on the PC; darn you sports stuff.). As the game gets rolling, I'm treated to a very intriguing -- and cool -- cutscene of some soldiers moving through a forest toward a large church structure. It was a nice touch to have the point-of-view be from another soldier, or rather the commander of the group, as they marched toward it cautiously. When they get inside the church, they move around slowly, as if they're looking for something. Then -- BAM -- you hear the screams and cries of fellow soldiers outside getting slaughtered by some insane demon thing. Next thing you know, that thing is busting through the glass at the front of the church all dramatic like. This leads a stare down between the hottie commander chick and the demon (EPIC). One of the soldiers just ain't standing for that, though, and pushes her out of the way, and then tries to be heroic by attacking the demon, which results in him becoming friends with the wall. This, of course, makes all of the other soldiers get into a panic, and they do what they do best -- fire their guns trying to kill the thing that's scaring them. Unfortunately for them, this demon has awesome bulletproof hax. All of the bullets just bounce off of him like they were nothing. But now they've gone and annoyed the demon, so the slaughter of more soldiers is on. One of them starts to get desperate, though, and pulls out a grenade -- digging for the heavy firepower -- but the demon laughs and swats it away. The chick from before watches at it drops right in front of her face... and then it goes boom. When the smoke clears, you can see the demon managed to protect her from the blast by standing in front of it. He gets up, drops her, and walks away, transforming back into a human as he does so. Looks like -- you guessed it -- Yuri. Is that a win or is that a win? The next scene is back at the Lieutenant chick's headquarters, where she's telling her superior the story of what happened at the church. Not too long after that, the general she was talking to has a visitor -- Nicholai, a Cardinal for the church of the Empire...or something. Right from the get go, I got bad vibes from him, probably the mixture of that awful outfit and that really bad haircut combined with trying to be all nice nice. That leads into Karin following him into some church prison where they held the heathens to die. The whole point of this (aside from being an introductory dungeon to introduce the player to the basic gameplay elements) was to get some tool that he'll use to exorcise the demon. During this, the game starts getting you familiar with the Judgement Ring and Combos. At first, I was a bit indifferent to both of them, but after the introduction and getting my hands on it, the Judgement Ring is really cool. I like that you can not only attack every time, but also expand the Hit and Strike areas and the number of hits you can do per turn, which increases the difficulty of the timing. I also liked that you can critical every single turn with the right timing -- but there's a certain risk involved with it, as missing will end the turn. Pretty cool stuff. Combos are pretty neat to with chaining together various strikes, like hitting them up at a High Angle, smacking them down into the ground, or hitting them hard enough to knock them back. All very cool. One left field complaint, though -- Nicholai runs like a 'tard. Whoever designed the running animation needs to stop. |
ZFS | Posted 4/29/2007 2:10:14 PM | message detail | #047 |
When I get to the top of the tower, it's time to
fight the scrubby introductory boss. The only interesting thing that
happened during the fight was Karin ending up getting Berserk status
toward the end of the fight, which I assume was because of a lack of
SP? The interesting thing about is that it doesn't work like the
Berserk status I'm used to in RPGs. While you do lose control of the
character, they tend to work in more of a confusion type status where
they'll start throwing around items, attacking randomly, or whatever.
With that all done, though, Nicholai got the Mistletoe. Afterward, Karin ends up leading Nicholai through the forest and the town of Domremy to the church where she encountered the demon. Along the way, one of the other troops (one of them being named Johann just guarantees that it'll be cake to get Mumei to play this game, by the way) gets startled when you talk to him because he swears he's heard another unit of troops around, which just starts sounding the alarms that something is about to go down. I'm immediately suspecting Nicholai because Nicholai has sketchy written all over him. When they arrive in the church, you can hear the sounds of soldiers outside, yet again, being slaughtered. Karin wants to help them out, but Nicholai insists that's not a good idea because he's here... ...And lo: the demon appears. This time, however, he transforms back into his human form to reveal that he is, in fact, Yuri. Nicholai then starts in "OMG ITS TEH GODSLAYER I KNEW IT HAW HAW U WON'T ESCAPE MY WRATH THIS TIME SLAYER OF GODS 'CUZ I GOT THIS STICK THAT IM GUN RAM UP YO ASS AND STEAL YO SOUL CUZ YOU KILLED SOMEONE I WANTED TO KILL." Now what happens next has me, to use certain terminology, marking out -- Yuri swiftly dodges Nicholai's attack and knees him in the face. There is nothing, nothing cooler than Yuri's mad kung-fu skillz. You can try to come up with something else, but no. You're wrong. So after getting a knee to the face, some of the Nicholai's cronies come busting through the door, which Yuri has already suspected as being the ones who killed the guards. The big guy has some little girl in his hands, which Yuri demands to have back and starts to move toward them. But the guy quickly tells him that if he makes any funny moves, the girl dies -- and he has a really damn big knife right at her throat. Yuri, remaining his cool and collected self, gives the reply, "Fine. Go ahead. If you kill her, you'll die next." (Yuri has a great voice actor, by the way). So that shuts the big guy up for a while. Now Nicholai is finally recovering from that knee to the face, but Karin is now confused as hell. She whips out her gun and starts unloading on the big guy holding the girl, which gets him to drop her. Nicholai says she would have made a fine ally, but she must be killed like everyone else. This prompts him to attack her... ...Only to meet Yuri's fist. This guy just finds ways to get his ass kicked by Yuri, even when Yuri isn't the target. Unfortunately, he managed to get stabbed in the chest with the holy stick, which starts sucking his soul out of his body or something. There seems to be a flashback of some kind that plays with him talking to Jeanne -- the little girl before -- and an old man who he's been traveling with for about half a year or sometime. He talks about how he plans to defend the town, Domremy, until he dies, but the old man just thinks that's him looking for a place to die, which he responds he has no intention of just throwing his life away, and that it wasn't even his own to begin with because he owes to her (hello there needing to play game one, but I can piece two and two together and realize it's probably that Alice chick.). |
ZFS | Posted 4/29/2007 2:10:48 PM | message detail | #048 |
He later wakes up from the dream inside of some
cave with Karin and the old man. Turns out gramps managed to save him
right before he died, which has left him barely able to even stand.
Even more detrimental, Yuri can't use his Fusions and
he seems to be attracting monsters to himself due to the malice
emitting from his soul. As the group moves on, Yuri eventually
collapses from fatigue and wakes up, alone, inside of his... SOUL!!
What's particularly creepy is seeing his body growing out of a tree in
the middle of the place. Kind of crazy. But the main point of this is
to get one of his Fusions back, which requires the souls of the
monsters he's defeated in battle. I think it's pretty nifty that you
use the souls of the monsters you defeat to unlock, and power up, his
Fusions. Battling for more than just EXP! Before he wakes up, there's a scene showing what Karin and the old man talked about while he was unconscious, which was mostly just the old man telling her about Yuri. They've been traveling together, he first ran into him when he came with his niece in his arms (Alice, who was apparently Yuri's lover), and then how he dug her grave with his own hands. Pretty tragic stuff as a whole. But as if things couldn't get even worse for Yuri, some huge ass beam comes shooting out of his body and a giant spider-esque things with hands appears. So it's time to do battle with it... Something I want to comment on. The old man is a puppeteer, right -- BUT WHY DOES HE HAVE A DOLL OF A LITTLE GIRL WEARING A SHORT DRESS?! That's has to be the strangest weapon I've ever seen for a character. That's worth a nice, big "WTF." This boss was a bit harder than the other one I faced simply because it hit for enough damage to put characters into the critical zone. Whenever he hit Blanca or The Old Man, they were generally down to the 12 - 17 HP area. But with a nice stock of Thera Leaves, I could get back up to full health in one turn. Between the beat down they laid out and then pulling off three perfect strikes per turn with Yuri, he ended up falling pretty fast and without much damage done. Blanca ended up going into Berserk status by the end, though. After that, it was back to the world map and I saved... So far, I'm liking what I've seen of the game. The battle system is fun, I love the setting of the game (back during WWI, Europe, etc.), and Yuri is made of lots and lots of win. Even though I haven't played the first game, I can tell that the guy has been through a whole lot of crap, and he still manages to truck on and be really cool despite all that happening to him. Between his personality and those crazy kung-fu hax, I have a feeling I'm going to really like this guy. Lots of intriguing stuff has happened so far to really make me interested in learning more, so it's already getting off on the right foot. P.S. -- WTF. I played one hour. How in the hell does one hour translate into a three post monstrosity?! I convinced myself "this will be short; I didn't do that much." But no. I'm not doing one of these again; next time it's a short rundown -- watch as a quick series of notes ends up being one post long. <_< --- "It bugs the crap out of me when someone talks more than I do." |
