It's time for a Man Festival (HM just bought Shadow Hearts: Covenant!)

trannyscience | Posted 5/1/2007 9:05:12 PM | message detail | #201
you can get one from a guy in Goreme Valley, though I don't know when he gives it to you. you can get another if you hit Domremy, at the altar thingy there.

not sure when you can get them, though, so you might not be able to yet. can check though.

Let me solve this for you.

Yuri > Lucia > Character you haven't gotten yet > Blanca > Karen > Joachim > Ana > Gepetto.

Stick with that and you will ok.

Disc 2 > Disc 1.

This inequality approaches certainty. Music, atmosphere, dungeons, characters and story are all better (except for the tail end <_<). Disc 1 is really good storywise at first, but it quickly becomes randomly wandering.

So I saved in the White Palace. I've clocked in about 14:30 so far and the main party is about level 25.

-- The whole sequence where you meet Jovis was great. They did a nice job throwing the emotion out there without it coming off as cheesy. Especially toward the end where he was dying, and Yuri was kinda upset that he brought it on by coming to ask for help and whatnot.

-- I love every major "soul" scene that Yuri has. It's like going into the character and seeing the problems, learning about him gradually, and all that good stuff. There hasn't been too much of it so far, but the latest part where he had to go find Amon, then had a talk with Albert Simon (LOL HM SHOULD HAVE PLAYED SH1 FIRST) was cool. Probably one of the coolest things I've seen, at least.

-- The Zombie Dog and its blasted Paralysis stopped me from getting that pawprint. I need to get an equip that stops that and go back there.

-- The underground sewer area right before you get into the Palace was kind of cool. It made me realize that I like how much these "dungeons" and "puzzles" make sense for the area they're designed with. Nothing too complicated, but just the right amount of difficulty for an RPG.

-- Yuri jumping down out of nowhere to stop the Tsar from getting killed was both unexpected and full of win. Punch to the face and the guy goes flying. Awesome.

-- Yuri transforming into Amon, wrecking an airship, and then rocking Rasputin's world is, bar none, the greatest thing ever. Holy crap.

-- Uh, I think that's it. But I probably forgot some stuff. I'm still in "holy crap he just took down an airship yuri you are my hero" mode, so...

Eh, the only thing you missed was Nicholai immediately getting the hell away from the palace once Yuri showed up, leaving Rasputin and Veronica to whatever fate awaited them. This is important, because it's the only cool thing Nicholai does in the entire game.

Best Yuri scene is also when he confront Ishimura.

There was a lot of interesting story bits there at the end of the Disc 1. From what I've gathered so far, Yuri has been "infected" with the Mistletoe's curse, which essentially eats away at his personality, memories, and thoughts and consumes the soul, leaving nothing but a "hollow" person to live on. Rasputin, with his final breath, says that there is apparently no way cure to it. It was originally meant to be a last resort weapon against Albert Simon a year ago, or however long it was.

But, due to Yuri having conquered Amon -- exerting a superior will over the God of Darkness -- it has effectively lessened the curse on him. Slowed it down, maybe. I'm forgetting exactly what it was Rasputin said. Also, Yuri's incredible willpower giving him control of demonic power thanks to Amon is about as badass it gets where I come from. That's just amazing right there. A nice contrast to the opposite of that would be Rasputin, according to Nicolai, who had the demonic power without the will, or control, over it (possessed by Asmodeus).

And in the lastest twist, Nicolai reopened "Pandora's Box," which let the spirits of all those who had died in the Apoina Tower be let free, corrupting people's hearts with evil desires and whatnot. Based on the very beginning of Disc 2, that's what escalated World War I into becoming what it has. Rather nifty take on the matter, I think.

Kato, the Japanese guy from earlier in the game, popped up again protecting Nicolai before Yuri got a chance to finish him off. I'm missing the connection Yuri and Kato have (LOL PLAY SH1 HM; yeah, yeah, shut it), but this guy has some needle energy hax or something. He scratched Yuri's face when he tried to progress, then just sent him flying across the room when he tried to fight. Not sure who this guy is, but he seems plenty capable of handling himself. He's also not about to abandon Nicolai due to him being the next in line to become the Tsar of Russia or somesuch.

So for a quick feat recap -- Yuri beat Albert Simon (think he had Amon, right?), then he beat Rasputin who had Asmodeus, then he beats Nicolai with Astaroth. Godslayer, indeed. Jeanne is still looking for a way to cure Yuri's Mistletoe problem; the group is heading off to Japan to stop Nicolai; Yuri has been kicking ass and taking names for a good 16 hours now; and that's about what I've gotten so far. There's, of course, more to it, but yeah.

I'm adoring this game. The design (dungeon, puzzles, overall world) has been brilliant so far. I like the whole European setting right before, or during the beginning of, World War I. They take plenty of liberties with the history, but that's what makes it so much fun. It takes a realistic setting and time period, then gives makes it its own. The battle system is probably the best thing about the game (except for Yuri; Yuri is the best thing about this game by far. Man, Yuri's awesome. I need to keep repeating that once per paragraph.) The Judgment Ring throws in a little something new to standard turn-based combat, and its uses in and out of battle are terrific. (getting discounts when shopping; getting an extra umph out of items in battle, etc.) I certainly know it makes me look forward to each and every battle, even if I'm not really doing much outside of standard physicals during non-boss battles. Keeps it entertaining the entire way through. Then you top all of that off with an awesome cast of characters -- probably the most enjoyable group in a game for me personally since FFX -- and you've got pretty much everything you need in a game.
ZFS | Posted 5/2/2007 6:16:42 AM | message detail | #249
It baffles me that this game isn't more popular. I mean, this isn't one of those niche RPG games that would only appeal to a select group of people. This game oozes "Everyone can pick this up and enjoy it just like Final Fantasy." I'm pretty shocked that I'm one of, what, a handful of people on Board 8 that have played the game? That's crazy. I was talking to tranny about it earlier. Just doesn't make any sense. We need to fix that here. It's unfortunate the mainstream didn't catch on with it, but GameFAQs... Board 8? This sucker needs to become the next Tales of Symphonia around here or something.

Anyway, I should be hitting the sack. I wanted to do this before I went to sleep. Little did I know it would take so long... oh well. Not too much I have to take care of tomorrow outside of work and errands. Huzzah.
