Oh man, I don't remember him being that bad. I guess I sometimes forget who we're talking about here.

As for Super Mario World, as much nostalgic love that I have for that game, I don't think I could put it quite that high. As remarkable a platformer it is, it only manages to reach a third place position on my favorite platformer list. It is a brilliantly designed game overall though.

And I've also always been one to compare it to SMB 3 and try to deduce which one I like more...after so many years of doing so and constant switching back and forth between the two, I'd have to agree that it's entirely worthless.

[Metal Gear Solid 3 Spoilers]

8.) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PlayStation 2)
Metal Gear makes real men cry.

The Metal Gear Solid that turned the clock back to where it all began -- the days of the greatest soldier who ever lived. Set during the Cold War back in 1964, the world is on the brink of a nuclear holocaust. With one of the U.S.'s finest having defected to the Soviet Union, they are forced to bring in the big guns --a man who goes by the name "Naked Snake."

There is a lot to say about Metal Gear Solid 3, and most of you who have followed any sort of Metal Gear discussion topics have probably heard it already -- but you're going to hear it again. One of the biggest changes from the rest of the series was pitting Snake into the wilderness; making him eat everything from random fruit to -- you guessed it -- snakes. I'd say this was my favorite of the changes MGS3 took from previous games. Being able to hide in the brush of the jungle, slither across the ground silently and pick off that unsuspecting guard who is running his route, or, as mentioned before, eat the various wildlife you run across was awesome. It gave the game a whole different atmosphere from its predecessors.

What also came with that was the addition of camouflage. This was a mixed bag with me because of how it was executed. I loved being able to blend in with the environment and not be detected by guards whose military boots were right up on my nose, but I also disliked the constant need to go back to the menu to change my camouflage for maximum camo index percentage. I thought it was great, as well as being able to heal yourself with various medical tools, but the execution of it wasn't as good as it could have been. Of course, the game is a bit lenient with this and the need for stealth isn't as necessary as it is in other games. I believe Hideo Kojima even mentioned that those who wanted to go about the game using stealth were free to do so; but those who wanted to go Rambo -- even have a camouflage, or lack thereof, for it! -- were free to do so as well.

The other part about this game that was particularly special was the narrative, I thought. The other Metal Gear Solid games have always told intriguing stories with a fantastic cast of characters, but MGS3 just completely rocked the others. Perhaps it was because the setting was closer to something more historical -- the Cold War, Soviet Union, etc. The part about history I tend to enjoy the most is reading up on all of the wars, be it from medieval Japan to WWII. It was quite enjoyable seeing Kojima take this historical setting and mess around with it a bit and give it that Metal Gear flair.

And what would Metal Gear be without its awesome cast of characters? A miserable pile of secrets, that's what! The cast in MGS3, both the villains and heroes, were so damn just so damn cool. I was never really a fan of FOXHOUND or Dead Cell, a big dislike toward Dead Cell, in fact, but The Cobra Unit was made up of lots and lots of win. Those boss fights were easily the best the series has had to offer. Having a sniper showdown with The End in the jungle was one of the tensest and most exhilarating fights in videogames. Sure, it took forever (and was kind of slow), but a match between two snipers isn't exactly going to fly by. The other awesome "fight" was with The Sorrow, traveling through murky water and seeing all of the dead soldiers who you had killed was entertaining, particularly those soldiers who had died by your knife with the blood gushing from their necks.
ZFS | Posted 3/27/2007 10:05:23 PM | message detail | #077
But, of course, the greatest of the great was none other than Big Boss. That man went through more over the course of one mission than Solid Snake has gone through in his entire life. Believe. Bones broken all over his body that he had to heal himself, lost his eye, constantly had to fight and even kill the one who was most dear to him, and still managed to bring home the bacon at the end of the day. Unfortunately for him, however, he was completely unaware of the whole story, which was that everyone had lied to him. Being able to play as Big Boss during this time really gave a whole different sort of perspective on his character, making him more of a tragic hero, and explaining why he eventually wanted to establish Outer Heaven, a world where soldiers would thrive without the manipulation of the governments. But I'll not go on and on about how awesome of a character Big Boss because that's another write-up for a different list...!!

That whole piece about Big Boss does lead into one of the talked about parts in the game, though, and that's the ending to Metal Gear Solid 3. Out of everything in the game, that was far and away the part I enjoyed the most. I remember there being a poll earlier asking if you had ever cried because of a videogame before; I voted "yes" because of MGS3. Now, mind you, I wasn't balling or anything, but I had plenty of tears running during the credits of the game. I haven't ever really gotten emotional like that over any other game, because most of them are pretty cheesy, but I think the deal breaker there was seeing Big Boss salute The Boss's grave with a tear running down his face. The characters and writing were just so good and believable that I guess it's what makes that sort of thing possible. Best Ending Ever? I think so!

Let's see...oh, ooooh. I was going to wrap this one up because I didn't want to drag this out, but there is something that just cannot be ignored that puts it a step above all others -- The Ultimate Weapon. Leonhart knows what I'm talking about !! When you buy Subsistence, there's a "theater" on the second disc of the game that you can view all sorts of "blooper"-esque videos. One of them happened to be this EPIC -- epic defined -- rock, paper, scissors match between The Boss and Big Boss. Just when The Boss thinks she has won, Big Boss pulls out the greatest thing known to man -- The Ultimate Weapon, a sick combination of rock, paper, and scissors all in one. But, The Boss no sells and whips out a nuke, blowing Big Boss away at the very end. It's brilliant and I come with Youtube links for those who are not in the know!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MaQvOdjjTuQ

So yeah, Metal Gear Solid 3 is pretty ****ing awesome. While I don't think it's the best Metal Gear Solid, primarily for a few gameplay hiccups like being so damn menu-based with camouflage, it's easily one of the best games out there today. For whatever reason, there's a good chunk of Board 8 that hasn't gotten around to playing it it seems, so all of you need to go do that. Now. In fact, you could play through all three Metal Gear Solid games in preparation for Game of the Year 2007 coming out in November -- Metal Gear Solid 4 FOR OUR THE PS3 or somesuch! awww yeah

great list so far :) SMW will always be dear to my heart, I loved SMB2 and 3 almost as much and they probably have more of a nostalgia factor, but SMW and DKC2 are just instant ****ing classics, pretty much singlehandedly making the SNES my favorite system for platformers. MGS3 is my favorite of that series too, it does have some issues in gameplay with the constant pausing, as you noticed, but kojima just continues to improve his story telling skills so much with each game, and the gameplay had it's upsides too. also revolver ocelot

This should be the last one for tonight.

7.) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PlayStation)
What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!

Ah, Castlevania. 'Tis one of the best series in gaming. Symphony of the Night is the best it has to offer, too, at least from what I have played, which admittedly isn't anything on the DS. I think it manages to blend that adventure-esque feel with 2D platforming and a dash of RPG elements so perfectly that it exceeds anything else Konami has done with the series. Other Castlevania games were enjoyable; SOTN was incredible.

One of the biggest draws of SOTN, I think, comes from how open-ended the game is. I loved being able to pretty much go nuts and explore any part of the castle that I had access to. There are plenty different ways to go about advancing the main "story" of the game, and the exploration is only made better by the RPG elements thrown in (EXP, equipment, stat boosts, etc.). I think it was really the various RPG-esque elements that made me like the game and its successors so much. It's not just killing things over and over and over; instead, there's actual purpose in doing so (EXP, armor, weapons, etc.). Of course, it's the sort of game that I could just go through and kill stuff and have a good time, but then it'd just be an ordinary Castlevania game. Good, but not excellent.

Oh, I know what I wanted to do here. In this game, there is one monster that can be killed to obtain the Crissaegrim. I'm going to be frank about this -- that weapon sucks. It's so absurdly overpowered that the game isn' even fun anymore. It's like an invitation to mindlessly slaughter everything in the game, making for what was already easy adventure even easier. The range is ridiculous, the power is ridiculous, and the animation of the most ridiculous of them all (how many slashes in one second? Yeah.). Of course, it's not mandatory to use it, so it's not any sort of deterrent from the game, but someone has got to stop the Crissaegrim hype train!! Alucard Sword FTW.

Speaking of the devil, SOTN is the one game where you actually get to play as Alucard from beginning until end. Playing as The Man With The Plan opens up for so many different gameplay options over the much inferior Belmonts. First off, he can transform into mist. Simon Belmont had trouble with stairs and ol' Alucard over here can slip through gates. That's just how badass he is. That's not the end of it, though, because he's got mad bat hax, too. None of these are particularly useful in combat, but they do make from some interesting solutions to getting past barriers and whatnot! aww yeah
ZFS | Posted 3/27/2007 11:56:51 PM | message detail | #099
A couple of other notable things include the refined use of the map (which instantly reminds me of all the Super Metroid comparisons; SOTN > SM) and every piece of audio in the game. I said it before, but I'm not much of a music guy when it comes to games, but whoever composed the soundtrack for SOTN was a genius. I don't think there's one song on there that wasn't good. I think some of my favorites were like Crystal Teardrops, The Tragic Prince, and Final Toccata. The other half of the audio delivered in spades, too -- because who does not love the voice acting in this game? People try to hate on it, but it's so bad that it's good. It's twisted like that. I give a particular shout out to Dracula, who delivered some epic lines such as, "It was not by my hand that I am once again given flesh. I was called here by humans who wish to pay me tribute" and "Perhaps the same could be said of all religions"and we can't forget "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!" This, of course, also led to inspiring writers around the world to deliver some really poor fanfiction that I wish Semi never linked me to.

The only issue that I could really think that I had with the game is that it gave off a complete lack of difficulty. Generally, it doesn't particularly matter to me how easy or hard a game is, but SOTN was pretty bad about not even threatening you with hard monsters or lack of life. I don' think I ever died once throughout the entire game, which is pretty damn rough. I can't remember if there was any difficulty option either, but if there wasn't, including one would have gone a long way.

To conclude, I think there is no better way than to steal a bit from my other write-up since I'm going to keep getting hounded by you heathens on changing my mind all the time. Ahem -- "But it's unlikely I'll ever play a Castlevania game that manages to top the greatness of Symphony of the Night. Is it filled with lots of truth? You better believe it is. Yeah...this write-up wasn't very good, but it's one of those tough ones for me to talk about for whatever reason. Probably because I've only played it once years ago.
