[Final Fantasy VII Spoilers]

6.) Final Fantasy VII
Tifa could have punched Meteor right out of the sky, but she held back so that Cloud could regain his confidence. </Vlado-speak>

Good ol' Final Fantasy VII. This was the game that jumpstarted my love for Sony's newfangled disc reading machine they called the "PlayStation" (why in my day we blew in carts to get our games workin'!). I remember being suckered into purchasing this through those kuh-razy advertisements that were apart of the massive marketing budget that Sony had given the game. A Soldier of Fortune, huh? They said it couldn't be done in movies and they were wrong, you say? And more than 100 artists and programmers?! Yeah, it's all pretty corny in retrospect, but that's probably the only time that advertising has really made me want to go get a game.

I'm actually quite thankful I did get sucked into the FFVII hype machine, because I might not have gotten a PSX until many years later, if at all, if I hadn't. Talk about a sorry era of gaming that would have been, being confined to only the N64 (on snap indeed)! One of the bigger things that stood out to me about FFVII, in comparison to all the previous Final Fantasy's, was the change in character designer, from Amano to Nomura. I think Amano's character designs are pretty much a whole mess of ass (sorry, Amano fans), and I loved what Nomura had done with making his characters look pretty damn cool. In particular, Cloud and Sephiroth, who were about as badass a hero/villain combination at the time. There wasn't any female with an exotic hair color or a guy in a skirt fighting a pig demon; this was significant amounts of character design badass oozing from my television.

I thought the Materia was pretty cool; it never bothered me that it ultimately ends up making your characters pretty similar, and perhaps a tad bit broken in the process. Some people think that's awful, but I'm pretty lenient on things like that. So long as it doesn't suck, I'm pretty good. But I'd almost want to say that FFVII's gameplay was a mixed bag for me, but I suppose "mixed bag" isn't exactly the right phrase to use here, because I can't really name something negative about the gameplay; I just never got deep into it. That may sound strange with how much I like FFVII, but I like it almost exclusively for its storyline, characters, and music. In terms of its gameplay, I'd probably rank it pretty far down the list of FF games.

But boy did it deliver on the characters and story. I don't think there was one character in the game that I didn't like. They were all interesting, well-written (even with a poor translation), and each brought something to the group that made the interaction among them work really well. Some of them could have used a lot more actual story relevance (Red XIII), but I liked that the game managed to dedicate parts to the main cast to flesh them out a bit. Characters like Cloud were pretty much always getting fleshed out and developed as the game progressed, but the most memorable scenes, I think, were the ones like the Corel Prison with Barret and Dyne or Cosmo Canyon with Red XIII or -- and this is my favorite -- Cid's desire to go into space being ruined when what's-her-face, who I'm forgetting, was trying to make sure everything was perfect right up until the launch where Cid had to bail. The game is full of great scenes like that, but no one had them like a certain villain...

"The absolute best of the entire game -- that's right, time for minds to be blown -- was Sephiroth. He was so good that he's going to get a paragraph dedicated to him and just how amazing he was. I'm pretty positive that he's the only videogame character who amazed me without me having ever seen him. FFVII's writers did an incredible job of building Sephiroth up and making him into this powerful, admirable figure. President Shinra says, "He was brilliant. Perhaps too brilliant," and then you later find out Mr. President's back got a sword sticking out of his back! You hear him mentioned again because that sword he used to kill the President, the Masamune, was only capable of being wielded by him. A little later, you see a Midgar Zolom dead with a stake driven right through his head. Midgar Zoloms, at that time, are ridiculously hard to defeat with a three man group. Sephiroth, in what seemed like an effortless fight on his part, just rocked that Zolom's world. That is power. That is power that the player can see; something they can relate to, if they fought the Zolom. That was badass.

Even further still, the scene where Sephiroth walks through fire is probably the most memorable scene in the whole game. Here you have this whole town having been slaughtered and burned by one man. He shoots you one of those death glares, smirks, and turns around and walks through the flames. He can be criticized for a lot of things, but Sephiroth had an unprecedented amount of style to him. Everything about him, from his design to his actions, just oozed style and flair. Between that and his unnatural amounts of charisma and presence, I think he was what made the game that much more enjoyable. This is not even getting into the pieces about his character. Sephiroth just brought presence that everyone else in the game lacked. When he appears, the attention is focused purely on him; when he's not on screen, the attention is still focused on him. It's nuts -- and I love it. But I suppose that's enough about good old Sephy because this isn't his write-up -- and most of you probably don't like him anyway !!

There is something that has always bugged me about FFVII, though, and it's those blasted character models. I'm sure everyone has heard the lego jokes by now -- and some people actually find that...charming, for some reason -- but I don't think I'll understand how one year's extra knowledge on PSX hardware allowed them to produce those great character models in FFVIII while not being able to do the same in FFVII. I think FFVII would hold up much better today if it had characters models that were in proportion on the world map and towns and such. That isn't to say that I can't play FFVII today because of the rather bad graphics, but I know it'd be a lot more enjoyable on my eyes if they could have pulled off proportion on their characters -- even just using the battle models for the field models would have been good!

But yeah, Final Fantasy VII is one of those games where I never really got too deeply involved with the gameplay and loved every minute of it exclusively for the story. It's gameplay gets the pass with me and I've become so interested in the FFVII "lore"that it'll always be one of my favorites. Love the game to death, and I really hope Square gets around to giving us a remake on either the PS3 or 360 or both. FFVII with those graphics, updated translation, and various gameplay tweaks? I'll take it!

I think I'm pretty much the main proponent of this view :) it's clean, it has a unique style, and it's not a ridiculously bad attempt at being realistic. speaking of which...

but I don't think I'll understand how one year's extra knowledge on PSX hardware allowed them to produce those great character models in FFVIII while not being able to do the same in FFVII

FFVIII's character models were pure ass, granted they suffer from the fact that they are the only part of FFVIII's aesthetic that aren't absolutely antastic, but they're terrible in their own right anyway. FFVII's character models > that crap

also(I know, sorry for flooding your topic with insipid disagreements <_<)

I find the idea that it would hold up much better today if the models were improved to be egregious. great games are great games. I didn't play it until 2004, I still loved it. there are SNES games that I have only played recently, that have become favorites. my favorite freeware game ever, cave story, is retro as hell and I love i-

in any case, I agree with most everything else you said :) sephiroth was presented better than any previous villian in gaming, and maybe better than any since, and the rest of the cast compares favorably to the rest of the series as well. if it's gameplay were a bit better, or simply required less grinding(FFVIII did well with this), it would probably be in my top 10.
ZFS | Posted 3/29/2007 12:03:50 AM | message detail | #146
There is nothing wrong with Final Fantasy VII today, but it hardly looks good. That's all I meant by that comment. Few games from that era come away looking good, so it's not just something FFVII was a victim of or anything.

But yeah, Sephiroth is great. He's been outdone by a couple of other villains from a couple of other RPGs -- one of which happens to be on this list !! -- but he's at least the best that Square has managed to create.

Yeah, despite what many thought at the time, most PS1 games did not have good graphics at all. Few games on the system could even compare to Super Mario 64, let alone something like NiGHTS Into Dreams. By the way, the PS1 version of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is one of the ugliest games I have ever seen.
