Semi's Xenosaga 3 playthrough topic of immense suffering and horror. *spoilers*

Day 2

First, I'm treated to cutscene of whom I assume is chibi-Kevin getting jettisoned from his home planet as it's being destroyed (XS ripping off Superman hype? Yes!) and his mom goes all Gnosis on him. I don't care.

Then there's a cutscene of the Testaments standing around some kind of tomb wearing their matching costumes. Virgil says some mildly creepy stuff, Kevin might as well have not said anything, and the other two literally do nothing. Whee.

Cutscene #3! It's that scene from Attack of the Clones where Anakin chases that chick around the city, except with giant robots. I hate this game for making me remember I've seen part of Attack of the Clones.

MIYUKI: You're not going to help, Doctus?
SHION: Don't depend on others to do everything for you!

Because it's not like Shion has ever been a liability in either of the previous two games. -_-

First dungeon was too empty. Just lots of space with the occasional easy puzzle or something to blow up. Chibi-Fei's image popped up during that escape cutscene, but he has to do something more than play with blocks in the XS1 ending if I'm supposed to care about him.

KEVIN: It has to be a female! Females are healers!
SHION: There have been male healers, too.
KEVIN: lol, no. That's male bias.

I can already tell I'm going to looove Kevin. -_-

After that, lots more cutscenes, varying between heavy-handed psuedophilosophical nonsense from Helmer and flashy space battles.

Battle system is inoffensive, if bland, so far. Why the hell did they get rid of bonus slots? I liked those. And what did they do to the turn order? No chance of double-turns outside of boosting? This is definitely a step back from the previous two games. I must say, though, the fact that Shion was pretty crappy, even compared to the temps (one with failure stats), brings a smile to my face.

ES Battle system isn't much different. There's just less variety and larger numbers.

The game is largely inoffensive thus far, but I've only completed Chapter 1. Too early to make a judgment, though Shion and Kevin have already managed to annoy me.

More later, if I feel up to it.

battle system is really simplified and fast. I like it better that way, the random battles of 2 are really tedious.

I did miss the bonus slot at first, but I got over it pretty quick.

Day 3

I feel like I've accomplished nothing today, since all I did was run around Fifth Jerusalem, see a bunch of cutscenes, and play some of that puzzle game, so I don't have much to say. This will be short.

That one scene with Gaignun is really easy to take out of context, even in-game:

"Stop! Get away! Stop! Stop it! Stop it! Don't touch me!"

"Stop it! I won't do what you want! *sobs* I-I..."

...

I probably would have never known Steve Blum was Sellers' VA if I hadn't been told. I guess I'm not used to him voicing characters in a soft voice with a hint of a British accent.

XS3's in-game database actually spoils some parts of the game that haven't been revealed yet in XS3 nor in the previous games. Had I not known that Namco included the entire database on the demo disk, which was then easily hacked, I might have been surprised.

Other than that... there was some random "Yeshua" angst, Shion blacked out a couple of times, HAY YOU KNOW MY EX-BOYFRIEND LIKED TO EAT OUTSIDE TOO, and... was there anything important that happened? Nothing else made much of an impression on me.

Hopefully there will be something worth writing about next time I play it.

Day 4/5

Juli's conversation with Shion in Chapter 3? The one where she rambles on about being envious of Shion (WHY?!) and how she only does everything she does to erase the shame from the Mizrahi name? Who talks like that? She came off really unnatural there, and, I don't know, too self-aware?

Then there was some bit where Shion tells Miyuki that it isn't her "job isn't to fight, so stop whining." This is coming from a character who, quite possibly, has the least business of any of the permanent PCs being on a battlefield (you could make the case for MOMO being less qualified, I guess), but who also whines all the ****ing time about the stupidest of things at critical moments during which the party, if not a much larger number of people, are in mortal danger. Shion needs to take some of her own advice. Or shut up and die. Preferably the latter.

Virgil confronting the party was great. He mocks the party for being too stupid to figure out basically anything that's going on and verbally berating Shion for all her self-righteous BS was so satisfying. I had forgotten how great it was for someone to, in-game, call her on all that. So far, he's the only character in the game to display any sort of charisma, and he's been good or great in nearly every scene he's been in. I can see where the hype comes from. Of course, Albedo has to show up like some sort of charisma void and ruin things, but not before Virgil mouths off to him, too. His contempt for basically every other character in the game (especially Shion), just makes him that much more likable (another example of the Necron effect, perhaps).

The T-elos boss fight was painfully simple, primarily because it was the first enemy in the game vulnerable to Choke! It probably spent around 40% of the battle in Break, and watching Ziggy run up behind it and snap its neck never, eeeeever got old. Between that and MOMO spamming her thunder ether, T-elos didn't last very long. Its damage was pretty sad outside of Low HP, and it only got T-SKYLLA off once, anyway. I guess that MAGDELINE's break damage could have added up if not for some break healing, and the fact that it spent a lot of the battle broken itself.

The cutscene afterwards was stupid. Really stupid. The fight scene started off pretty good, but by the time the two glorified toasters were having a mid-air battle amongst the falling rubble from the ceiling, it was too over-the-top for me. It just seemed like the were trying too hard. But that has nothing to do with why it was stupid.

KOS-MOS: We're pretty ****ed right now. I'm going to delay the enemy none of us could hurt. You guys run and make sure this upcoming beating won't be for nothing.
*KOS-MOS gets rocked while the rest of the party just stands around doing nothing*
Shion: No, I won't leave you!
*everyone else continues to stand around doing nothing while KOS-MOS gets its ass kicked*
KOS-MOS: Seriously guys, I'm completely outmatched. I'll probably be in sixteen different pieces within the minute. Get the **** out of here.
Shion: No! I'll stay here, being useless, occasionally call out your name, and make this sacrifice of yours be completely in vain!
Jr.: pew pew *tries his handguns when T-elos isn't even reacting to concentrated chaingun fire, while everyone else stands around, doing and saying nothing*
Roth/Kevin/Red Wanker: Something something princess something [insert something vague and ominous here]
PLOT DEVICE'D

I honestly feel dumber for having seen that. Hopefully tomorrow will be filled with less idiocy and more Virgil.

In XS1, I used Shion as little as possible until that one boss battle where you're required to use her. Then the boss proceeded to wipe the floor with my party. It wasn't until my second attempt that I realized that having Shion dead prevents the boss from using its MT attack of doom, thus making things much easier.

Conclusion: Shion is more useful dead than alive.

Late, I know.

Day 6/7

Flashback sequences starts things off... barely-clothed Shion and Kevin? I do not like where this is going! Luckily, nothing really happens other than Kevin revealing he's the last son of Krypton.

Then some stuff happens where chaos clearly knows something about what's going on, but he doesn't say anything about it, which is something that annoys me when better characters than chaos do it, so I find it really irritating when he does it... especially since he's done it for about two and a half games now.

It quickly becomes apparent that time-travel or something close to it is involved when the party realizes that they're on Miltia, which doesn't even exist physically anymore during their timeline. They run into Virgil, who continues to threaten to shoot the party, even after they save his life, until he passes out from blood loss. He should've pulled the trigger.

The party brings the near-dead Virgil to a church where they run into chibi-Shion, teenage Kevin, and Febronia. Shion and Allen do not recognize Kevin, even though he looks a lot like his older self, which made me groan. Turns out Kevin was an asshat as a teen, too. I wonder if he was remotely likable back when the rest of his planet was alive...

Then it's time throw in a few Xenogears references to get people talking! First it's the old guy from the first gear dungeon in XG! I did not figure this out until I tracked down the tomboy granddaughter he wanted me to find. It's Maria Balthasar in the least expected cameo ever! Only, unlike pretty much every Xenogears cameo in the XS series, she's older now. Even Siebzhen got chibified to roughly human-size. Anyway, we fight, and, sadly, she's one of the better bosses in the game. Slow is a bit of a nuisance, no real threat, but her damage wasn't horrible once mini-Siebzhen got taken down (and hitting people with a big hammer is just cool). She could also break MOMO's evade (more on this later). I also later find out her dad got kidnapped and died in an experiment, which just furthers the Maria/Mai connection. The cameo was total fluff, but I enjoyed it.

Two scenes later, and Shion shocks me into stunned silence as she essentially decides to go **** around with time and space because she doesn't like being stuck indoors.

Shion: Have you ever wanted to go screw around with the space-time continuum?
Allen: Well, yeah, I'm sure everyone has something in the past they'd like to change... but it would probably be a pretty stupid idea with potentially disastrous results.
Shion: That sounds too logical. I'm gonna go see what I can change.
Allen: What? No! We have no idea what might happen.
Shion: But I hate being cooped up inside like this!
Allen: You can't go causing time paradoxes!!
Shion: You can go be a tattletail if you want.
Allen: This will not end well.
Shion: Don't worry, I'm sure I can't cause much damage. I'm just going to the city.
Allen: The city is a war zone right now! Ugh... now I have to go babysit you.
*Shion walks away*
Allen: ...I'm going to kill the writers for making me be in love with you.

Yeah, yeah, I'm sure there was something about wanting to make the future better in there, and she probably wanted to dig up more info on what her dad was up to, but this is essentially how I saw the scene as it happened. >_>

Shion and Allen suck at being undercover. They're shocked when they see people who were alive 15 years ago alive, and Shion starts referring to her parents as "mom" and "dad" aloud. She also flies off the handle at her dad, and he comes across way more cool-headed than I would have expected if he were actually up to any real sort of no-good. I'm getting the feeling that he and Mizrahi will end up being to only two people in U-TIC who turn out to not be scumbags. Well, three if you count Febronia. And more than that if you count random grunts.

Virgil amuses me again by being the first to question the identities of the mysterious people who aren't with U-TIC or the Federation. Seems like he got most of the brains in his universe. Little Shion tries to give him a flower, and he's not enough of an ass to not accept a kid's gift, even if that kid is Shion. His wounds don't seem to be bothering him much, but he needs to sleep off all the touchy-feeling stuff Febronia and the two Shions are spouting.

Assistant Scott: KOS-MOS sucks.
Professor: Yeah, it doesn't even transform or combine.

This just made me realize how much better this game would be if it had Voltron instead of KOS-MOS.

Following that...

ARGH NOOOOOO!! SHION SHOWER SCENE! MY EYES!! AND SHE'S TALKING ABOUT BEING THE ONLY PERSON CAPABLE OF STOPPING THE COMING SUFFERING!! MY EARS!!

After a few hours of water, soap, and vigorous scrubbing, I get back to the game.

voyagers in there base
stealin there androidz

Jr.: Shion, stay back. None of us can hurt this guy! And you, being the most useless of us in a fight, would likely be instantly killed!
Shion: The Black Testament? OH NO HE HAS KOS-MOS OUT OF MY WAY!
*Voyager force chokes Shion or something*

Then KOS-MOS comes back, and it and Shion are forced into my starting party for a boss battle. After wasting a few turns to get my Ziggy/MOMO/Jin party back in action, and even more turns trying to steal from him, I finally take some time to notice how pathetic this boss fight is. He wastes nearly half of his turns laughing while looking at MOMO, as the game tells me he targets characters with the lowest HP. Meaning MOMO. Who proceeds to dodge all but one of his attacks. He spent most of the battle not being able to break her evade. While she raped him with Fire Bolt II. I can't really remember the last time I fought a boss this scrubby. He supposedly has some scary limit attack like T-elos did, but he could never build up anywhere near enough stock to be able to use it. He died fast, couldn't land an attack to save his life, and, when he did land that attack, it wasn't very damaging. Even the first boss was better than him, and it was a glorified tutorial about the break system which faced a godly party that contained Shion and Miyuki.

The scene after it was basically just Voyager being stupid and some durango-bait ShionxKOS-MOS tripe.

Now I'm about to go steal some Vessels of Anima from Labyrinthos, and Shion is convinced it'll be simple, since we have her fake IDs. So, obviously, this is going to go horribly wrong.
