#11: Vivi (Final Fantasy IX) Vivi is great. he's essentially the only conscious black mage in the game, and he's got a bit of an existential crisis going on because of it. it's not especially deep or anything, just "who the crap am I?". he spends a lot of time moping about, but not in an annoying way. it's more introspective, trying to figure things out. his reactions to whenever he sees black mages are always great, and he has my favourite line in the entire game: "All I can do... is sit with them." Vivi feels attached to the other black mages and watching him take responsibility for them is really neat. ...but let's be honest here, it's all about the black mage costume. I remember the first time I saw that thing on the GIA back in 1999 or 2000. I was just off being really disappointed with FF8 and was kind of down on the FF series in general.. until I saw that. the second I saw Vivi, I was like "..oh my god, I need this game." black mages are just that awesome to me, especially considering my love of the original Final Fantasy. you really can't make a more appealing character design, and his battle animations are great. I'd say 3 good, 2 medicore, and the rest are pretty lousy. I kinda like Steiner and Garnet. I guess Garland would have been kinda cool if he had more than 5 seconds of screen time. --- I made a living on time trial blowing myself off to cross the finish line at ludicrous speed. -transience |

I started FFs with the PSX era, so when I played FFIX, I had no idea
that Vivi was modeled after an earlier character design. One day my
brother emailed me a screencap of FFI (or something) and I was like

I dunno, I always thought Suikoden characters sucked for the most part
and that the storyline and addictive nature of collecting all 108

Viktor is pretty sucky, but yeah, they're not very deep characters or
anything, but they're all pretty fun, the ones that don't just
disappear after you find them anyway. In Suikoden III's case, Chris,
Hugo, and Geddoe were great, even if the villains sucked something
awful. Geddoe, in particular, kicked ass. Nothing quite does it like punching people in the face! --- Called "Godslayer" by some, feared by most. |

That's because I just remembered that one point during the game where
Geddoe punched that one NPC in the face! Those two were better
