Samus is badass in that totally superficial way, yeah. Nothing wrong
with that! She reminds me a lot of Boba Fett in that regard, although
the Star Wars novels have tried to give Fett something of a

#10: Mega Man (duh) Mega Man is just cool. the way he teleports in and out of stages. the way he jumps with his arms out and his mouth open. the way he jumps down ladders. the way he walks. his awesome slide. the cool title theme in Mega Man 2. everything about Mega Man is just awesome, and then you add all the billion weapons he's collected over the years. sure, most of them suck and are only good for killing one or two bosses in the game. but once in a while he gets a really cool ability. obviously the Metal Blade comes to mind, but all the rush stuff he gets to play with, the quick boomerang is pretty cool, the shadow blade.. I love this little guy. he's probably got a ton more fun weapons in later games, but I just could never get into those. #9 - Phoenix Wright (duh) Phoenix really isn't all that amazing personality-wise. he stumbles over words sometimes, he often gets circles run around him by Edgeworth in court, he spends a lot of time trying to piece things together while not really "getting it" at all. but man, it's his attitude that I admire. Phoenix has absolute faith in his clients and believes that he will find the truth even when it's 100% obvious that they're guilty. of course it's a video game so he usually gets his way, but still, that resolve is really admirable. I also love how he takes what is essentially nothing and rides it as far as he can in court. Phoenix's behaviour in court is the definition of grasping at straws, but watching him work is really amazing. he makes for a great protagonist to a fantastic series. plus, he's always being followed around by immature girls and children, so he always looks good by comparison !! aw yeah case 2-4 where phoenix is more of a babysitter than a lawyer --- zizzy *hopes for a Game Contest announcement* |

#8: Albert Simon (Shadow Hearts) *slight Shadow Hearts spoilers* if you're going to make a crazy RPG antagonist, take tips from Albert Simon. Simon is the best I've seen in that role. "eccentric" is probably the best way to descibe Simon. he's a gentleman with a love of top hats and tea.. oh, and destroying the world. Simon's intro scene is awesome - killing people with a wave of his hand, sending Yuri across the room with a blink of his eyes, and then crazy healing after he got his face deformed by Yuri's fist. his "coming out as the main villain" scene - the end of Asia - is absolutely awesome, from him floating around in a bubble to talking about hitting up London for some tea to his "d'oh!". the role he plays throughout the Europe portion of the game is also awesome. I absolutely love the part when Alice - the girl he's been after for most of the game - is alone in Rouen and he shows up just to talk. Simon is just amazing at that stuff. SH's awesome dark atmosphere owes a lot to Simon. but the best thing about Simon is his relationship with Yuri. he's got a bit of a rivalry thing going on, and his end speech "no hard feelings, eh?" is fantastic. anytime Simon is on-screen, Good Things happen. that's the mark of a top-notch villain. oh, and they totally ruined everything about him in SH2, but it's easy to pretend that never happened. --- zizzy *hopes for a Game Contest announcement* |

#7: Wilhelm (Xenosaga) cold. as. ice. *Xenosaga spoilers* I love this guy's design. he looks absolutely immaculate in that suit. everything looks so perfect up in his little cubby hole of an office. no wasted space, not a single thing out of place. Wilhelm is like that too -- no wasted motion. Wilhelm is all style. there's not a lot of substance there... in fact, it's questionable if there's any there at all. Wilhelm is the biggest offender of pseudophilosophical BS and cryptic statements in a game filled to the brim with pseudophilosophical BS and cryptic crap. everything about him is intentionally vague, so vague that it's questionable what his motives are, if he has any, or if he's even human (or ever was). I'm still not even sure if he's a bad guy. but man, I love his style. I love his eerily calm demeanor. it is absolutely impossible to shake Wilhelm. this dude is completely dead to the world. he has utterly no remorse for anything and will manipulate anything for his own benefit. this guy is in such control of his feelings that you could shoot him in the face and he wouldn't even blink. he wouldn't even get mad. he'd be like "I knew you were going to do that", and then just stand there in thought for another 15 seconds before snapping his fingers and killing you. that's just how Wilhelm rolls. even when a guy karate chops his freaking arm off, he doesn't even move. he just chastizes the guy in that slow, cool way that I love the guy for. even when Kevin shoves his freaking arm through his body, he doesn't move. Wilhelm could have turned around and completely destroyed the guy, but he just didn't feel like it. on the other hand, he's also the biggest tease I can think of in video games. you've got three games of hype about how incredibly omniscient and omnipotent this guy is. I was dying to finally confront this guy and see how badly he would destroy me, and.. he vanishes. he doesn't even fight back. he just up and disappears. I still have no idea who, what, or why he exists. in a way I kind of like his mysteriousness, but at the same time I was really looking forward to getting obliterated by the god of the universe. ah well. even in disappearing I thought he was really cool. certainly not the best way to resolve the game, but nothing will shake the "whoa, that guy is cool" feeling I get from Wilhelm. --- zizzy *hopes for a Game Contest announcement* |

Wilhelm would have been cool if like...did stuff. Throughout all three
games he's like "Oooh look at me, I've cool, I can do stuff, don't mess
