X-com has crappy AI and is fun because of that.

Mostly because if the AI were any better you would have almost no way of winning. >_> There's "difficult" difficult and there's frustration difficult.

#41: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Year: 1987
System: NES
Developer: Nintendo

Punch-Out is a timeless game that's always entertaining and funny to play. I love the awesomely stereotypical characters in the game and how there's no way we'd ever allow this in today's politically correct world. I also love how pathetically easy the game is - sit there, wait for the game to begin a slow punch, dodge and punch. simple and easy (at least the first 80% or so is), but so fun.

I used to have a goal of beating this without getting hit, but Mr. Sandman would always mess me up and I never played it consistently enough to memorize how to get through his flawlessly. the entire last circuit is lots of fun and Tyson is a great last boss fight. I can't remember what my first time against him was like, but I'm sure it was utter annihilation and that everyone else who played this game experienced the same thing. all in all, Punch-Out is just damn fun.

is it? the beginning is so damn easy, the middle is easy as long as you could figure out how to stop every character's special attack, and the end is the hard part. the last boss is certainly hard, but everything else is pretty simple.

I think Punch-Out is easy once you get to know the opponents, so it's just massively easier when you replay it than your first time through. or something like that.

Comments so far:

I never cared for Zoop much. I'm a huge puzzle game fan, but I never got too into that one.

Arkanoid is awesome, but hard.

YI > SMB3 > SMW

Like SHINE, I own Phantom Brave and La Pucelle Tactics and have yet to touch either of them. <_< I'll probably play them later this summer though, as I just bought them two months ago, but yeah.

I remember the first time I beat Punch Out when I was like 11, I jumped all around the room for a while. I actually used to lose to Bald Bull all the time as a kid until I realized you could hit him when he charged, then I could usually make it up to Tyson.

#40: Warioware Inc.: Mega Microgame$
Year: 2003
System: GBA
Developer: Nintendo

Twisted involved turning your gba in all kinds of ways, Touched involved using the ds's touch screen and Smooth Moves used the Wii Remote in all kinds of interesting ways. they're all decent games, but all of them took away my single favourite thing about Warioware: d-pad + A.

there's something awesome about d-pad + a. it makes the games so much simpler, which I thought was the whole idea behind Warioware. in later games I feel like I'm fighting the control scheme or trying to figure out what to do in the short amount of time I'm given instead of just playing the games. the original Warioware is just more obvious. the original's microgames also seem somehow more unique, probably because it was first. it just seems more novel even though the other games have far more unique ways to play. there are a lot of microgames that I enjoy, but 9-volt's are by far the best. classic oldschool games + classic gameplay? totally awesome.

#39: God of War II
Year: 2007
System: ps2
Developer: SCEA
Game Rankings Score: 92.8%

I never really played the original GOW. I helped a friend through the last few hours since he sucks at video games, but I never really played it. God of War 2, however, I played from beginning to end and loved nearly every minute of it.

GOW2 is a game that's just fantastic to watch. it's great graphically, the music is intense and the entire game has a very epic feel. GOW takes a fairly standard genre and just crams as much style into it as it can. instead of grappling from platform to platform, the screen tilts and things crumble all around you. instead of simply killing an enemy, Kratos will engage in a minigame of sorts where the end result is a gruesome death for the enemy. GOW2 is bloody as hell, takes Greek mythology and craps all over it (but in an entertaining way), and is so over the top that it makes you laugh. it's a fantastic way for the PS2 to go out.

GOW2's downside is that it's style over substance. the combat system is fairly straightforward and usually involves simply spamming the same move over and over until everything on the screen dies. there are times when it gets harder, but those times are rarely fun and are usually just frustrating because the game just doesn't have a lot of depth. (AUGH MEDUSA GAZE OR WHATEVER) I'm fine with this though because I love the game's presentation and don't play the genre for deep gameplay. it's probably why I didn't like DMC3 -- I like my beat em ups to be simple and casual, and that's exactly what God of War 2 is.

and for what it is, it's as good as that type of game gets.

#38: Dragon Warrior Monsters
Year: 1999
System: GBC
Developer: Enix
Game Rankings Score: 78.9%

unlike Pokemon, I have a huge attachment to the monsters of Dragon Warrior. I first played DW1 nearly 20 years ago and the monsters are one of the most endearing parts of the game for me. the cute monsters and the entertaining animations were my favourite part of DQ8, actually. (it's why Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is my most anticipated game of the moment.) I just have an amazing attachment to slimes and babbles and magicians and wyverns and tons of other classic DW monsters.

on the other hand, my least favourite part of DW games is the huge, expansive worlds that I get lost in while getting into encounters every other step. DWM solves this by having a very linear setup where it's obvious what to do. the entire point of the game is levelling, which has always been the most appealing and addicting part of the DW series for me. DWM might just be the most addicting game I've ever played. when I first played it last year, I didn't do anything else for like three days. I just sat there levelling, breeding and collecting monsters. it's all I thought about. after two days I was like "what the hell is wrong with me?"

like Pokemon, DWM has a lot of depth to it, though it's a different kind. DWM has eight skills that you can pass on to any monster by breeding, so you can essentially make your ideal monster through several generations. it's a lot different than Pokemon where each guy only has a certain moveset. I like the DWM setup more because I like the idea of slowly building up my ideal monster. it's kind of like building a generic character in FFT or something like that. I like having the ability to do whatever I want with whoever I want.

of course, DWM's strength is also its biggest weakness - the breeding system is ridiculously complex and you kind of need a FAQ to ensure that you don't mess something up. I like playing these kinds of games by trial and error, and if you breed two good monsters to get a crappy one it's fairly frustrating. other than that fairly large flaw though, this is a great game to sink some time into. I can't recommend this game enough for people who like old turn-based gameplay and anything resembling Pokemon.

#37: Xenosaga II
Year: 2005
System: ps2
Developer: MonolithSoft
Game Rankings Score: 73.4%

I like Xenosaga 2, a lot more than most. unlike most, I actually like the actual battle system. it's really complex, and that's part of its appeal - it takes a lot of thinking and planning to get everything down correctly. if you know how to manipulate it you can really smash bosses in one or two combos. the story is short - too short, in fact - but still good. I like it more than Xenosaga 1 in both battle and story, and I also love the cutscene soundtrack, one of my favourite RPG soundtracks of all time.

on the other hand, it's got a laundry list of problems, both minor and major, that really drag it down. for one, they gave regular enemies way too much HP. fighting random battles is a chore and can really kick your ass if you're not paying attention during every fight. it isn't as bad as some people say, but the last dungeon has encounters that can last a good seven minutes. that's just not right. the game kinda forces you to play by its rules because you simply cannot power level in xenosaga 2. this isn't as big of a flaw as some people make it out to be, but it's still fairly annoying. and I won't even get into ES battles, which are slow and boring.

I can keep going, too. while the cut scene soundtrack is really good, the actual stuff they play ingame is pretty awful. all the optional / sidequest stuff is just bad, which is a problem since the skills you get from it are fairly important. the voice acting also isn't very good.. I mean, you could go on for a while on the flaws of xenosaga 2.

but despite all that, I love the story, some of the dungeons are fairly interesting and it has one of my favourite endings of all time. for all its flaws, there's a lot about this game that I also really like.

#36: Mega Man 3
Year: 1990
System: NES
Developer: Capcom

Mega Man 3 is inferior to 2 in every way except for one: the slide. I love sliding in MM3, it's just so much fun and I can't explain why. oh, and I guess I like the "rush" items more than I do in 2. a rush jet that you can control by yourself while jumping at very little cost? totally awesome.

other than that, I just don't enjoy this game as much. the main reason is that I just don't like the weapons as much in this game. they're all right, but I don't use them at all unless I'm fighting a boss. they're just not that much fun to use regularly. the only one I do use is Shadow Man's weapon, or Magnet Man's sometimes but that runs out so fast that I try not to use it. seriously, Top Man?? the bosses also don't make a lot of sense. I can never remember who is weak to what despite the fact that I've probably beaten MM3 a dozen or so times. the beginning of the game is also kinda weak because some bosses are just difficult to kill with just your regular weapon.

but yeah, besides those complaints? excellent game. good-great level design, some fun boss fights towards the end, I like the second half of the game where you go after MM2 bosses and it's got da slide. can't mess with that. this is a classic Mega Man game that everyone needs to play.

#35: Final Fantasy VII
Year: 1997
System: PS1
Developer: Square
Game Rankings Score: 92.5%

final fantasy 7 feels the most dated out of all the ff titles to me. it's the awful 3d, the blocky characters and how bad it looks while moving around in big areas. there's a bunch of huge rooms in Midgar that I dread doing because I can barely see what's going on. the train room comes to mind, but there's a bunch of others as well. and how can you not love it when the screen is zoomed out so far you can barely see your character? aww yeah

disregarding that, FF7 is pretty fun. it's got a simple-but-effective battle and materia system, and while it isn't the hardest game in the world I do struggle with it sometimes since I run from a lot of fights and don't get lost. I also rarely do any optional stuff and haven't caught a chocobo in about eight years. the only time I've ever gotten a gold chocobo was by beating one of the weapons. gah, chocobo breeding sucks.

blah, I'm being way too negative here. FF7 has a lot of strong points. I enjoy the story and I like Cloud. all the stuff in Midgar is pretty cool, excluding the stupid stuff in Wall Market. the Shinra Corporation Building is probably my favourite part of the game - I'll never forget listening to Trail of Blood my first time through after Sephiroth went and kicked some Shinra ass in there. really awesome stuff. the rest of cd1 is also good, though the storyline kinda goes to hell when it's all A MAN WITH A BLACK CAPE JUST PASSED BY!! for like ten hours straight. it's a crappy way to advance the story, but it works. cd2 and 3 are not as fun for me for some reason, probably because the game doesn't tell you what to do. I think Square wanted to make a lot of money off strategy guides and did this on purpose. I also don't care for the last dungeon or the lifestream crap.

but my favourite part of FF7 has to be the atmosphere it gives off. FF7's soundtrack is only above average, but it has some awesome atmospheric tracks that absolutely make the game. I love songs like Anxious Heart, the aforementioned Trail of Blood, Who Am I and You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet. those songs just fit the game so damn well.
