But yeah, I'm about the only one other than the person I borrowed it from. (Everyone else I tried to borrow it from refused in an attempt to save me from the torture <_<)

Like I said, on a Board that typically has a permanent hard-on for non-popular games, of course there will be a disproportionate amount of people who like it. All the gamers I know in real life hated the game.

This is like the first time I've been associated with the board's having a hard-on for "non-popular" games. Great accomplishment TuRtLe. Let me ask, where you around the GameFAQs boards back around 1999/2000?

I don't think it's that this board has a "hard-on" for "non-popular" games so much as it's that this board is on a site about gaming, so have a "hard-on" for games in general.

Really, I can't think of a single game that I've played and hated or even disliked, and I'm sure many other board members are the same.

lol Turtle. FF 9 has a lot more people who love it than hate it... and a lot more people who are indifferent than hate it as well.

I think FF8 has more "haters" than FF9.. but also more people who love the hell out of it. if you want to talk about love-hate games, FF8 qualifies a lot more than 9. FF9 is a lot of indifference, a bit of love and a speck of hate.

and now, I lose 95% of board 8.

#20: Zork I
Year: 1980
System: PC
Developer: Infocom

god, I love Zork. I've probably beaten it more than any other game I own. I know every part of the game, I have a handdrawn map and I know every room in the game intimately. I first played this game over 20 years ago and I still go back for more. I guess a lot of it is nostalgia (and it would have to be -- there isn't exactly a lot of gameplay in Zork, especially when you know the entire game by heart), but I still love playing the game regardless. I just beat it for the zillionth time last week. Zork hits a special spot for me that I can't exactly explain, but the atmosphere and puzzles of the game are just unmatched in text adventures. I also like the quirkiness of Infocom. they were really great back in the day. Return to Zork was also a great point-and-click game. this is the only text adventure I play on a regular basis and I have great memories associated with it.

the later ones (assuming you mean Zork II and III) are a lot more complicated and convoluted. the first one is simple and far more classic.

#19: Tales of Eternia
Year: 2001
System: PS1
Developer: Namco
Game Rankings Score: 79.4%

I've had this theory for years that the first Tales game you play is your favourite. they're all basically the same thing: fun battle system, cliche characters and a mediocre story. I have a bunch of friends who like the Tales series, and all of them call the first one they played their favourite one. obviously this isn't always going to be true, but I think the interesting aspects of Tales games stop being as cool when you've been doing the same thing for a few games.

Eternia was the first Tales game I played for more than a few minutes. it's also my favourite by far. every other Tales game I've played has one or two things that bug the hell out of me: Symphonia has some of the worst dungeons ever created, Legendia's got an absolutely awful story & cast and Abyss has the tedious town-hopping thing going on amongst other smaller things (revisiting dungeons and overuse of terminology). Eternia, on the other hand? it's free of any major flaws. the characters and story are pretty bad, but they're unintentionally hilarious too. ("you bet!") I have a strange affection for Eternia's completely awful story, and it actually gets better once you get a ways in and the characters stop being completely cliche. god, disc 1 of Eternia's characters are pretty bad in this regard.

but it's the gameplay that sells me on Eternia. I like the 2d-ness of it and always found 3d battlefields a little tough to adjust to. I like being able to take out an entire screen at once with an ability and 3d battlefields mess with that. the gameplay isn't so good in the beginning, but once you get some more skills it's really fun to play with. I love the AI in the game for some reason, especially in regards to spells. once you get good healing spells you can really customize it and it's fun. I also really like the dungeons. there's a couple of really annoying ones (Forest of Temptation, that ridiculous board game dungeon thingy), but the rest are lots of fun. I love a number of them on disc 2, when you get cool abilities and it's fun to fight enemies. good gameplay + decent dungeons = a game I can really get behind.

my single favourite part of Eternia? Hardcore difficulty. most of the skills I like to play with are only available later on, so I don't get to play with them much. with Hardcore though, I get lots of time to screw around with RISING PHOENIX. best ability ever right there. anyway, Hardcore is brutally cheap and difficult, but also very rewarding. I'd say that the optional fight against Sekundes on Hardcore difficulty is one of my all-time favourite boss fights ever, and certainly the most rewarding when I first beat him. that guy just takes all your shots without flinching and then goes on to beat the living crap out of you. it's so much fun getting your ass kicked by that guy. I love Eternia for awesome fights like that -- and not much else. but that's good enough to make me love the game!

I figured I would end up having to. I should really just save this so I don't have to type up it every time. I'll do it later when the time comes.

But in the meantime, you have to admit the level design for Chozodia is weak.

My Tales inequality chain is almost the exact opposite of the order I played them in: Symphonia > Eternia > Phantasia > Destiny, and I played them in the order of their release (I have a weird thing about doing that with almost all the series I get into). Abyss/Legendia will probably mess that up, though I'm not far enough in either to really judge them yet.

there's always one!

I say, uh, Eternia >> ...Symphonia = Legendia = Abyss. seriously. I like all three of the others, but they all have critical flaws. if I were to replay one, I'd pick Legendia because it's the least aggrivating of the bunch.

as you can tell, I don't play Tales games for story. :) I've played a little bit of Destiny and Phantasia, but not enough to even gauge if it's good or not. I really didn't like the beginning of Destiny though.

#18: Dance Dance Revolution
Year: uhh... 1998?
System: PS2/Arcade
Developer: Konami

I am a bit of a closet DDR player. I'm not sure exactly why - maybe it's the fact that I hate j-pop, or maybe it's because rhythm game elitists make me embarrassed, or maybe it's because I feel silly jumping around on arrows, or maybe it's something totally different. but for whatever reason, I never talk about my small DDR/In The Groove obsession. (I consider them both the same thing -- for all intents and purposes, they are the same thing) I've probably played about 10 minutes total in an arcade. I just spend time at my best friend's house, playing whatever DDR game I convinced him to buy for me.

I'm decent at DDR, I can beat pretty much anything except for 10 foot songs. those suckers are just too fast for my eyes to read, plus I have some horrible stamina thanks to fitness-induced asthma. doing fast songs at high difficulties is basically like trying to jump around without being able to breathe. it's fun! my favourite songs to play, ironically, are fast, straightforward stomp-y songs like Afronova, Paranoia or Max 300. basically anything with a fast, steady beat is enjoyable.

I don't have the interest or skill to get much better at this point, it would just take too much effort for me to bother. I also don't even own a DDR pad, so I sometimes go months without playing. I love just screwing around for a few minutes here and there though, playing Sakura on heavy and then spending 20-30 minutes trying to catch my breath. it's fun!
