transience's top 50 games with writeups -- part 2, #17-#1.

You aren't really supposed to be using the GFs for summoning anyways. It's all about Junctioning. I just liked to show off the GF summons to friends. I even wrote a parody about summons/GFs back in the day. Still have it on my old computer.

FFVIII is easy to play! You spam GFs until you can get Aura spells. Then you start spamming limit breaks.

Wrong! You spam draw points, enemies, etc., for spells, use your GFs abilities (Card Mod FTW) to get even more powerful spells, and then junction those spells to your stats. Then simply hold X for battles.

The problem with FF VIII is that you just spend soooo much time drawing. I could have enjoyed it if not for that.

That's why you set your GFs to learn Refine abilities and you learn Card Mod as quickly as possible. It saves you a lot of time so you don't have to draw all the time. Seriously, you can learn Siren's Life Magic Refine fairly early on, and then it takes 10 Tents to have 100 Curagas. BAM!

#14: Final Fantasy X
Year: 2001
System: PS2
Developer: Square

objectively, I'd call X the best in the FF series. it's got easily the best battle system and the best ability system in the sphere grid. your characters in FF10 are unique at first, but can be customizable once they get out of their paths. I love this mix. it's also got the best world in Spira, a place that feels really alive when compared to other console RPGs.

I think my favourite part of FF10 is the interaction between the playable characters. the whole pilgramage thing is really a great way to develop a cast and FF10 does this beautifully. I may not like each individual character, but I do always enjoy the scenes where they're just chatting back and forth. Wakka's racism or whatever you call it, Rikku's perkiness, Lulu's blunt nature, Tidus's.. uh.. cluelessness?, and Yuna's determination are all really fantastic. I also love the personality they show when they're interacting in battle. it's really lame stuff, but I enjoy it nonetheless. FF10 also has some great boss fights, with the Seymour fights being particularly good. I also like Evrae a bunch.

the downside to FF10? well, the linearity is just painful. it seriously is just a straight line. there's no such thing as a dungeon in FF10, it's just walk towards the blinking arrow until you hit the next screen, and then repeat. I didn't mind it so much my first time through, but on successive replays it's really boring.

and now, I draw FF10 in ascii form!

------AUGH MY OLD MAN------------Temple-----------------SIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN !!----------------Seymour------------------Temple------------------SIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN !!--------->

(repeat x4)

the result is that FF10 has relatively low replay value. you can fabricate some replay value by doing various challenges involving the battle system and the sphere grid, but otherwise it's kinda boring until you get aways in when you get some more battle options. I don't find the battle system to be particularly fun to play with until you get to Macalania or so, because until then it's kinda standard fare. ("a flying enemy? better bring out Wakka!") once you get there though, it's a good time all the way to the end, even on replays.

there's some optional stuff you can do towards the end and the monster arena is pretty cool, but catching monsters is tedious. and I didn't even mention the quests to get the ultimate weapons, which are borderline stupid. overall, it takes too long for the game to get nonlinear, and then when it does there's always one or two drawbacks to all the quests you can do.

the other main flaw of course is the voice acting, which ranges from awkward (Yuna) to nerdy and annoying (Tidus). I enjoy most everyone else's voice though and it adds to the characters' personalities. Wakka's "ya", Auron's overall cliche badassness, Lulu and Rikku.. yeah, good stuff. too bad Tidus and Yuna have all of the lines though -- god, it's impossible to really enjoy Tidus when listening to his voice actor. I find that I like him better when thinking about him instead of actually watching him work his magic.

fix the painful linearity and this game is probably in my top 5. it's still really really good, just not as amazing as it could have been.

Are you kiddin' me? I probably replay FFX more than any other RPG I own. Well, to each his own, I suppose.

And I still maintain that J.A. Taylor did a great job with Tidus.

FFX-2 has about ten times the replay value of FFX.

of course, it's about 1/100th of the game that FFX is, but that replay value means a lot to me, and thus it just missed my list.

Alright, let's see.

I know Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy IV are on there (sup 6 versions of each game). Chrono Trigger's on there too.

Obviously Zero Mission and Super Metroid. Shadow Hearts, and Covenant as well as Xenogears.

That's eight.

Hmmm.

Xenosaga 3 maybe? I haven't been paying super-close attention, but if that's not on the list yet, it's gonna be showing up soon. Phoenix Wright 1 should be up here too, I think.

Well, that's 10.

Tetris'll probably be up there too.

Dunno about the other two, but if I thought about it a bit more I might be able to figure them out.

#13: Chrono Trigger
Year: 1995
System: SNES
Developer: Square

Chrono Trigger is incredibly fun because the plot and level design are really simple. I really enjoy CT for its minimal world design. for a game that has a fairly large scope and several different eras, there's only a couple small town and dungeon areas in each. if this game was made today, it'd probably have a huge world with all kinds of stuff going on, and that would really ruin CT's charm. anyone that claims CT is a complex game is flat-out wrong. it's simple and fun to play.

the other thing I like about the game is that it has a perfect difficulty level. I also love the balance between the characters. you can ask anybody what party they used in CT and you'll almost always get a different answer. I find that kind of balance really impressive, that each character has their own strengths and weaknesses and no one party is 100% correct. kudos to the developers for pulling that off.

my favourite part of CT? I'm not really sure, but I find CT incredibly addicting from around the time you get Frog to the end of Zeal. it's practically the entire game, I know, but it's just all so much fun to play. my least favourite part of the game is absolutely the end when the game gets nonlinear. I don't enjoy doing all of the sidequests and Lavos is pretty freaking difficult if you don't have optimal equips. I like a couple of the sidequests (Geno Dome, Black Omen) but the rest just don't really appeal to me very much. plus they're just a lot harder if you don't do them in some kind of logical order. CT is just about perfect up to that point on the difficulty scale (except the Golem Twins -- AUGH) and it really boosts from then on. it's not hard if you fight a lot or know what you're doing, but I don't do either of those.

yeah, I think this game is brilliant. its simple nature means that I love to replay it, even though I sometimes don't finish it due to not caring for the end. I'm not sure what about it is so much fun, but damn, once I start playing it I just can not stop. Trigger is more than the sum of its parts, and there's something about it that just makes me smile whenever I play it. I think that's awesome and not many games can make me feel that way.

Chrono Trigger is awesome. I never got bored of it, it was never too easy but never too hard, and the game didn't drag on too long, either. Everything about CT was perfect for what it was meant to be, and I totally agree with the sense that the minimalist, yet still deep, universe was exactly what the game should have been.

#12: Final Fantasy IV
Year: 1991
System: SNES
Developer: Square

holy crap square fanboy in tha house

FF4 is a game I have unlimited memories with. before the whole world got spoiled on Aeris, I got spoiled on Golbez in 1991. I still haven't forgiven the bastard for dropping that on me. I remember renting this game (I got a SNES because I saw this game was out) and getting up at about 4 in the morning so I could play it. I was amazed by its graphics and how much better they were from the original, which is just funny to say today. I remember getting to a certain point (the moon) and running out of time, returning it and re-renting it a few weeks later, only to get to the same spot. ahh, those were the days.

Final Fantasy IV is really awesome because, like Suikoden, the game's plot just moves. 15 hours and an entire story is told. I love that. I also like its story, which to me is the ultimate good vs. evil plot in an RPG. it's not the greatest thing, but I enjoy that aspect of it because it moves the plot along very nicely. I love FF4's five-character system and its unique characters. unique characters are a big thing to me and FF4 was the first game I'd played that had storyline characters that were unique in battle.

FF4 also has some amazing boss fights. the battle system isn't the greatest and it's fairly broken, but the awesome boss fights make me love it regardless. I love Baigan for some reason, Evil Wall is a great test of your strength, Rubicant is an awesome fight and the Four Fiends is my favourite boss battle in the entire series. I even enjoy some of the optional fights, like Plague or Ogopogo.

flaws for FF4? I... I'm not really sure. the battle speed is all kinds of messed up, to the point that the FF4 Advance port tried to add ATB bars and completely broke the speed of the game. I love how you can get a preemptive strike which means you'll only get hit three times before you move instead of five. I wish there was a way to fix this without nerfing the difficulty of the game, but there probably isn't; hell, it's even charming in its own silly way. I guess you could criticize the incredible spike in difficulty when you hit the last dungeon, but that's also something I'm completely used to. basically, FF4 is a flawless RPG to me. I have nothing I can complain about.
