#7: Tetris
Year: 1987 - 2007
System: GB -> PS2
Developer: Alexey Pajitnov / Nintendo

it's ****ing Tetris. what the hell can you say?

"the long piece had been waiting for this all his life. it laid in the "piece remaining" spot just waiting to burst. the Z and L pieces laid there trembling, waiting to receive him. Longy was about to finally get his chance. he lined up his spot and slammed down with all the strength he had. he was coming and nobody was going to stop him. the Z pieces closed their eyes and waited for the ultimate moment. they had never been penetrated before.

Longy struck at ludicrous speed and the Z pieces felt the pleasure they had been waiting for. and just like that, they disappeared. the player rejoiced and went on to the next level."

...well, I guess I can at least try. I really liked Tetris DS. I love vs. mode against the CPU, level 4 is the perfect level for me. level 5 is also fun if you don't mind getting a Tetris avalanche every four seconds. the DS is just made for Tetris with its portability, two screens and wi-fi. I love the addition of the hold piece, where you can double tetris people. lots of fun there. too bad friend codes suck so bad. fortunately, playing locally is still fun. too bad all my friends are way below me skill-wise -- not that I'm amazing or anything, they just suck that bad.

timeless fun right here, the same thing everyone's said about Tetris since the day it was released.

#6: Shadow Hearts II
Year: 2004
System: PS2
Developer: Nautilus/Aruze

Shadow Hearts 2 has the greatest collection of scenes of any game I've ever played. I could make an entire top 10 dedicated to the best scenes in the game. SH2 does it all. there's some hilarious characters and scenes. there's some terribly powerful and emotional moments. there's the best ending in video games. there's all kinds of "badass" stuff packed into those two discs. there's some fantastic CG. as far as sitting back and watch a game goes, nothing is better than this game. SH2 has a theatre mode after you beat it where you can watch the movies, and this is the only game I'd ever actually use it for. usually I'd only watch video games while playing them, but not SH2. I spend so much time on youtube randomly just reliving the game.

honestly, it is a crime that this game is not more popular. I usually don't care about these things -- what's "underrated", "overrated" or whatever else -- but SH2 is literally the most impressive RPG I've ever played. it does everything well. it has casual appeal. graphically, it's great. it's got fun gameplay. it's hilarious. this isn't some mega-cult RPG. it's got a wicked atmosphere that's near-unmatched. it's got a fantastic lead character that literally everybody likes. if SH2 had FF7's popularity, Link would be sucking his thumb in second place. when someone says "what game should I play?" to me, I always respond "SH2". it's that good.

SH2 has two flaws that bug me, though. the first is the difficulty level. frankly, the game is just too easy. I didn't mind it my first playthrough because the story and atmosphere carry the game, but on replays it's just not as fun. every battle is the same and there's never any threat of death. I don't need an RPG to be difficult to enjoy it, but SH2's difficulty is so low that you never get to play with the fun battle system. (New Game Plus is even worse.) the other problem is the crest system. I don't like systems that make every character the same. combine easy battles with the boring crest system and battles are a little tedious. it's still good, but not as good as it could be. one other small thing that bugs me are the dungeons. most are above average, but there's one or two that are just terrible.

I can completely understand why so many people call this the greatest game they've ever played. every single person should give this game a try. it's that good.

aww yeah baby

Awesome write-up, though. Agree with most of the stuff there, especially the bit about Crests making everyone the same magic-wise (much preferred SH1's way of making everyone unique and learning spells at certain levels). And the difficulty bothers me on the bosses more than anything. I wouldn't mind easy randoms if the bosses really pushed you.

But yeah, nothing too bad. Best game ever right there!

#5: Shadow Hearts
Year: 2001
System: PS2
Developer: Aruze/Nautilus

on a technical level, SH1 is inferior to SH2. the primitive battle system, the hideous voice acting, the ugly character portraits.. it's just not the most appealing game. where SH1 is completely awesome, though, is atmosphere. SH1 is all atmosphere. the graphics are PS1-esque, but I absolutely love the style. it's got this grimy, dark style to them that makes them really endearing. the music is beyond awesome, and most importantly it fits the game. the creepiness of the game isn't up to par with other genres like survival horror, but as far as RPGs go it's as good as it gets. there are a few different spots in SH1 that made me jump. the story is pretty good, too. I love the relationship between the hero and the villain, and the relationship between Yuri and Alice is also really awesome. SH1 also has some awesome looking enemies, which are either hilarious or just really messed up. the story is pretty good too for an RPG.

the battle system is overly simple, but I enjoy it. three reasons:

1.) it's quick. you can one-shot packs of enemies, which is great for levelling.
2.) I like the skill system. it's a lot like FF4 where you learn new skills at level, something that's essentially dead in modern-day RPGs. I definitely prefer this to SH2/3's crest systems.
3.) decent difficulty level. nothing too challenging, but certainly moreso than SH2. it's also a short game. altogether, it's a great game to replay.

my favourite thing about SH1, though, are its dungeons. SH1 has maybe my favourite set of dungeons in an RPG. there's one really awful one, but there's tons of ones that I really enjoy. they're short and sweet. the trio of dungeons in England are my faves, but Kuihai tower and Blue Castle are also pretty good.

as for flaws? hmm.. well, SH1 is fairly limited in battles and the bosses have a lot of HP, which means the bosses are just a lot of attack/heal over and over until the guy runs out of life. it doesn't have the greatest bosses ever, that's for sure. love the boss music, though. that's... really about it, excepting that one horrible dungeon. SH1 is a game that I really adore, and while it's certainly inferior to SH2, its overall replayability and atmosphere make it my favourite game of the last gen. every year, I like the game a little bit more.

#4: Final Fantasy
Year: 1990, 2000
System: NES, Wonderswan Color, GBA
Developer: Square

it's difficult to explain just why I adore FF1 so much. it's.. the most charming game I've ever played, just one of those games that simply feels perfect.

obviously, there's nothing special gameplay-wise about it. I love the non-linearity, it's just enough to keep you on the main quest while allowing you to do pretty much whatever the hell you want. I love the world of FF1, it's just big enough to be fun to explore while not being so big that you get hopelessly lost. it's challenging and for some reason I love grinding in it.. provided I find a good spot for it. the only time grinding bothers me is near the beginning because there just isn't anything that gives good exp. I love the class system and always will. I love the 8-bit character designs - the redness of fighter, the badass black mage hat, etc. I always play the Wonderswan Color version these days and I really miss those suckers. I love the balance of the game. I love doing solo games despite the fact that they're horribly frustrating and are grind-fests. I've even speed run the freaking game. I've probably beaten FF1 about forty times and it's rare that I go more than a year without playing it again. I'm actually at the end of the PSP version as I write this. it's the only RPG that I can play at literally any time and enjoy it.

flaws? in my FF1? ha! well, I really hate enemies that stun you. those guys were created simply to make solo runs a pain in the ass. I've never liked the whole Marsh Cave plot arc just because of how the difficulty spikes for a short period of time and there's a million little fetch quests going on at once. I'd like it a lot more if you didn't have to grind so much right there on Ogres and Creeps and Sharks. augh. I'm basically making stuff up here though, because FF1 is quite literally perfect to me. I've probably put a thousand hours on it in my lifetime. I've played it so much for so long that everything about it is just natural - nothing good, nothing bad, just the way things are supposed to be. in that sense, FF1 is, to me, RPG perfection.

#3: Super Metroid
Year: 1994
System: SNES
Developer: Nintendo

Super Metroid is probably the game I've had the most fun with in my life. SM's float-y physics are just so much fun to play around with, and the ability to sequence break the hell out of it is also really awesome. I love how Super Metroid just doesn't care if you do things out of order. most games nowadays get beta-tested to hell to make sure everything you do is intentional; SM seems to be completely apathetic. honestly, I don't know the "proper" way to play this game. if I tried to do it in the intentional order, I'd get completely lost trying to figure stuff out. it's so much fun to see how far you can push the limits in SM. mockball is fun, skipping grapple is a pain but is also fun, early wave is a necessity, Kraid before hi-jump is a good time, Ridley is a really fun boss due to his crazy durability.. so much awesome packed into this game.

Super Metroid's walljump is also amazing. when I was playing this game every day in 2002, I would barely touch the ground and push my limits to see how much I could get away with. I think walljumping around Maridia is my single favourite moment in videogames. Super Metroid has some truly amazing level design and its huge rooms are just brilliant. I just love playing around in those so much. awesome level design + great atmosphere + cool physics = amazing game.

SM has a huge flaw that drives me nuts, though - its control. I never really realized how bad it was until I played Fusion. doing basic things like running and jumping is all right, but I find myself fighting the control bigtime when trying to pull advanced stuff off. you can't spinjump while jumping into a wall. you can't respin in mid-air. I'm still not entirely sure how to jump in different directions with speed booster. space jump has bothered me for 10 years now -- it's like you can't re-jump if you let it fall too far. that's dumb. bomb jumping is extremely touchy, perhaps too much so. you have to cycle through your different missile types, which is really annoying against bosses. if I stop playing Super Metroid for more than a couple of weeks, I have to completely re-learn SM's weird controls. I can definitely adjust to them (it wouldn't be #3 if I couldn't, after all), but it's just unnatural.

it's really too bad, because otherwise it's probably my favourite game in the world. there's just so much awesome in SM's level design, bosses and physics.

#2: Xenogears
Year: 1998
System: PS1
Developer: Square

Xenogears definitely isn't perfect. the random encounter rate can get tedious, the text speed is slow (which is only important because no game has as much text as 'gears), it has some mediocre dungeons, disc 2's way of storytelling has... issues, etc etc. you could go on for a good while about all the minor things that detract from Xenogears as an RPG.

I don't think any of 'gears's flaws are crippling, though. the random encounter rate can get frustrating, but I actually enjoy the battle system. I love the deathblow system and gear fights are a little boring, but nothing bad. I've heard a lot of complaints about its dungeons, but I think they're pretty painless and Xenogears features a lot of boss fights that I really enjoy. Id, Shakhan, Grahf/Executioner, Opiomorph.. all fights that would rank in my top 20 RPG boss fights. the text speed is indeed slow, but I find Xenogears to have the most appealing story of any RPG so I don't mind reading it. you could probably cut 5-10 hours out of the story if they ever hired a damn editor, but I think that would actually take away from the depth that Xenogears characters have. all of them are developed fantastically and it has some of my favourite characters in RPGs. disc 2 gets a lot of crap, but I actually enjoy it. I'd prefer a world map, but I really like the story at the beginning of disc 2. the only time it bothers me is during the last 4-5 hours, where the game gets too ridiculous, even for me.

on top of that, there are several things that Xenogears does that's better than every RPG in existence. I already mentioned the story and characters - it's rare that I actually don't hate any of the characters, but even more impressive in Xenogears given its length, amount of characters and scope. the whole game is really atmospheric, helped in large part by the best soundtrack in video games. there's so many awesome tracks on the Xenogears soundtrack. I love the character designs, too. I'm not sure what it is about them and I'm not much of an anime person, but I just really like them. Solaris is one of my favourite areas in all RPGs.

I can't figure out why, but no game is more nostalgic to me than Xenogears. I didn't even play it until I graduated high school, so it's not like it's linked to my childhood or something.. I just love re-living the whole experience. it feels like more than a simple RPG to me, though I can't for the life of me figure out why. it's just special. that feeling alone makes it my favourite RPG of all time.

Zero Mission is really fun, but Super Metroid is probably a little bit moreso. it's just got better level design with the huge rooms and the more capable walljump. plus, Super Metroid came ten years beforehand, so novelty wins out there.

the reason ZM is my favourite game, and a lot better than SM, is because of its control. ZM's control is so damn tight. I just love playing the game because of how much fun the control scheme is to play with. I have beaten this game is every conceivable way to try and get more and more out of the game. and no matter how many times I beat it, I can always go back for more. (my personal favourite is a morph ball run, where I stay in morph ball form once I get bombs and play through as much of the game as I can without coming out of ball form. lots of fun, though I'm not sure why.)

I enjoy experimenting with this game so much that, for a long while, I spent hour upon hour planning out the perfect way to play through rooms. I memorized enemy locations and how they would move. I practiced all kinds of really advanced tricks all for the sole purpose of cutting half a second off my time. I had a weird obsession about playing this game in the absolute perfect way, even though I probably restarted the game a hundred times a day. I just kept on playing until I got absolutely sick of Zero Mission.

at this point, I struggle to even play the game because of how much time I put into it. I still enjoy it, but my skills are so much worse than they were two years ago and it's not as much fun to just casually play it. even when I do a 'casual' play, I inevitably try something that's rather difficult to pull off and fail miserably. it's still really, really fun to play, but I don't think I could ever get so singularly obsessed about it as I was back when.

but I can't think of any other game I'd call my favourite. I am tied to this game and can't think of anything else as possibly being any better. ZM is a little too easy for my tastes (especially the bosses -- what the hell Ridley), but otherwise it is absolutely flawless.

And a worthy #1, 'specially coming from my favorite series in the wide world of gaming.

Now go finish Prime!
