transience's top 100 users with writeups - part 4

Lopen | Posted 8/29/2006 7:39:19 PM | message detail | #151
This topic moves too fast! Just last night my write-up was done and I only get to comment now, 300 posts later? Um... #29, alright! Good writeup! Etc. etc.

I'm really tempted to take MC > Auron. But I don't have it right now. Not yet. It'll surprise, I'm sure! (He mentioned it in my write up!)

17 - Janus5000

Janus is somebody that I don't really associate with anything. he's funny and witty and sarcastic, but I don't think of him as one of our funny users. he posts in the stats topic regularly, but I don't think of him as a stats topic guy. he rips on Cokes and Kleenex all the time, but I don't think of them as "internet rivals". Janus is just always around and always awesome no matter what he does. it's probably why I always forget that he exists.

the thing that I do associate with Janus is Katamari Damacy. he loves both Katamari titles and is a pretty big PW fan as well. he had a Heroic Mario-esque contest blunder when he took Soul Calibur over Metal Gear last time around. I also associate video game music with him since he's always fighting with Kleenex about that. Janus acts older than his age too - I have a hard time believing he's only 16 or whatever. Janus is fun.

Neither does doing something like comparing this match to Mega Man against Link,. Star Ocean over Pokemon, or anything else that people like to cite. It takes no stretching of stats or crazy boosts or anything else for Ganon to beat Sonic. People just, for whatever dumb reason, think that way -- I blame that nasty "Noble Nine can't be touched lol" nonsense.

You can say it doesn't require any twisting, but the fact is you're depending on a boost, which is never certain (and in that sense, it's exactly like Mega Man). You're also depending on Ganon not being overrated in 2005, when we KNOW he was in 2003, and quite possibly was in 2004 as well (looking at Alucard 2005 through Sora 2004). You're depending on Ganon, the guy who got SFFed harder than anyone ever, not getting SFFed even a little by someone who's an ICON of gaming and whose biggest fanbase is Nintendo fans. And finally, you're depending on the release of a game whose release date isn't confirmed yet to provide this boost.

Is it possible that Ganon will win? Yes. Should you be confident in it? No.

You can say it doesn't require any twisting, but the fact is you're depending on a boost, which is never certain (and in that sense, it's exactly like Mega Man).

It is not comparable in the least to Mega Man in any way, shape, or form. The amount required for Mega Man to overcome Link is far worse than Ganon's worst case scenario. It's absurd to even think that comparison holds any validity whatsoever. The fact that this is an upset and goes against stats is why things are not "certain."

You're also depending on Ganon not being overrated in 2005,

WHAT?! Why would Ganon be overrated in 2005? There is absolutely nothing to support such a crazy idea. If anything, he was underrated in 2005. If he suffers, SFF, which he likely did, he goes up. If Samus is stronger thanks to the Nintendo Boost, he goes up. No scenario that could ever be considered likely would put him at being overrated. But, hey, if you think he loses to Tifa, Zelda, Dante, Zero, and Knuckles go ahead.

But that's about all I'll make comment on in here. Sorry about that, Tran Man!!

Then again, said number is better than practically all of them. Nice.

this is my thing. I don't know if "SFF" is the right word, just that people aren't going to vote a character-less villain over a gaming icon. Mario would smash Ganondorf badly.

16 - FFDragon

if we didn't like each other so much, FFD and I would probably make a good internet rivalry after the whole User of the Year debacle. I don't think either of us care enough to keep up such a facade though.

FFD is lots of fun. he loves ranting and raving about wrestling, 24 and Resident Evil. he seems to love games with cool atmospheres like Xenosaga, Vagrant Story, Silent Hill or SOTC. I actually have no idea if he likes the latter, but I just assume he does. it seems like his kind of thing.

FFD was one of the big DEATHMATCHers before it got shut down. his partial usermap axe took 21 of his accounts, including some good account names. that sucked. he still hasn't forgiven me for the 495-4 we put on (Metal Gear Solid 2) either. he also scarred me for life when he did the first Tim Allen picture. major props for being the first one to go through with that. once again, topic of the year. EC's picture yesterday had me howling.

I can't imagine anyone disliking FFD. he's always pleasant online and never says anything dumb. great guy.

15 - Leonhart4

I love arguing with Leon because he's flat-out smarter than me. well, that and we never agree. Leon is Heroic Mario's twin brother to me - smart, a good writer, loves video game characters and is very verbose. I want to say that those two are the only ones that could write a 4000 word essay examining the depth of Ryu and Ken, but I'm probably wrong. they're still the only ones on board 8 that would do it though.. I hope.

Leon and I clash as far as tastes go too. he likes androgynous Final Fantasy leads and Solid Snake while I like... uh, I'm not really sure. Samus I guess, or Yuri, or something like that. he likes FF8 and I like FF9, he hates Metroid and I love it, he likes Sonic while I don't, etc etc.

Leon ran the highly successful NCAA Character contest and the Nomination Rally contest, which in retrospect was almost a bad idea. the only good match we got with a nomination rally winner was Sub / Master Chief. oh well, that's how it goes. Leon's also lead a number of nomination rallies and is usually pretty successful. he's one of the most respected people on the board.

Leon's sole fault in my eyes is when he freaks out over a contest result. Kuja / Master Hand immediately comes to mind, as does anyone who doubts his dear Squall. he doesn't do this too often anymore though. he's usually just a laid back guy who likes to argue about the contest. in a lot of ways, he makes the stats topic go. he knows his x-stats inside and out (maybe too well!) and is just damned smart.

You really think Kuja wins that match in 2k4? I dunno...that whole fourpack seemed as easy as Sin to me (whose surprising overperformance, ironically, was the one real shock of the contest to me -- I didn't even know what game he was from, and I was tired of looking up jobbers like Ghaleon and Albedo).

Bah, not 'overperformance'. I downplay Sin like that. I was shocked that he got so close to Robotnik is what I was trying to say, and he could have won if the picture wasn't SO stacked I guess.

trannyscience | Posted 8/29/2006 11:00:56 PM | message detail | #172
I dunno, tough call. in retrospect though, Ganon, Bowser and Master Hand doing well and FF villains flopping should have been a signal. okay, so Master Hand winning was more Kuja sucking than a sign of strength, but still.

and I had Sin beating Kuja myself.

LOVE THE GLOVE, 2005

What gets me about Leon is that in any close match (or any match where there is a half-way decent case for it, at least), he'll pick his favorite...then vehemently argue for it. This is not a problem, but how he'll then generally not acknowledge that there's reason for said choice to be in a tough fight or some such and instead make it sound like we're just ignoring the facts.

I maintain Leon's one of my favorites here, and it's not like he CAN'T make a good arguement; he can make some great ones...but that's usually irked me about him regardless.

14 - Aeon Azuran

funniest man on board 8 right here. the #1 thing people think of when they think of Aeon is his eating of FFX:

http://www.freewebs.com/steinershocker/aeonffx.htm

(thanks to Steiner and TRE for archiving this one.)

just about every post from Aeon cracks me up. when he owned Rikku last week, that was funny. when he and I were trash talking over a transience/EEric vs. Aeon/Tai tag team match, that was fun too. when he's chatting/feuding with Popo or AT, I'm in message board heaven.

I don't know a damn thing about Aeon personally. I don't have a clue as to what games he's into or if he's in school or what. for some reason, I seem to recall that he likes Magus, probably because he picked him to win it all in 2k3 when he had that perfect first round. (or so I'm told, I wasn't around.)

Aeon is also running the highly entertaining rap battle. interest has waned in recent weeks, but it's still one of the best things to come to board 8 this year. everyone should read and vote in that thing, assuming it's still going on. Aeon rocks.

Aeon's FFX topic was the topic that really brought me to this board
all the Book Club chats dissolved into board 8 chats, and I never knew wht was going on, and I was too damned lazy to check out the board
then Aeon's pictures came along, and I was hooked
...
I'm not sure if this information makes people like Aeon more or less, but there it is
