transience's top 100 users with writeups - part 5 (the top 5!)

Pathetique | Posted 9/6/2006 3:57:14 PM | message detail | #351
Er... Wall of text coming up. Didn't mean to make it shi long, but I haven't really talked about myself on the board for a damn long time. x_x

Won't beat offended if you don't read.

As far as accounts go, Shadowdude II was my first, and I made it underage to post on the Pokemon G/S board. I'm almost seventeen now, so it's legit. >_>

I got "Shdwdde" from Pokemon battling on IRC and made that in September '02, but of course I had to go and account-suicide that one when it became clear that Frog wouldn't beat Solid Snake (That and Joe over Tails were my only two mistakes in 2004, but it kept me off the leaderboard at the end). I made Pathetique because it hadn't been taken and c'mon, let's be honest, it is a kickass piece. Didn't mean to make it my main, really, but plenty of my accounts are still around.

My tastes... to be honest, I probably play less games than Ed Bellis. I've always considered gaming my #1 "hobby," but when I think about it, I really only play popular games, which is why I seem to like them more.

I despise the term "overrated." By disliking a game, people lower the game's "rating," and its rating is therefore fair. I do think games can be overhated. Chrono Trigger jumps to mind. I know a lot of people genuinely don't like it, but I can't stand when popularity affects people's enjoyment of games. It can swing my vote, sure, but it's not a criterion on which people can judge something.

On the topic of fanfics, yeah, I read and write 'em, but... just between you and me, I mostly do it because I'm an obsessive attention whore and less because I love the characters. As I said, I don't play a lot of games, so I don't even know 80% of the characters.

I gained distinction on the Pokemon boards because I could spell and use logic, and the hierarchy was clear: Vets and skilled battlers garnered the most respect... and that was me. Board 8 was different when I came over at the start of the Spring '04 contest. Popularity works much more like it does in real life; the sociable, witty ones are usually the most liked, but you can become more prominent in any number of ways. Again, I'm a horrible attention whore, so I decided to use my writing ability - since we're on a message board - to "rise." It hasn't really made me popular, of course, but I've made friends on the board, which is actually pretty cool. It also has - in my opinion - made me a better writer. Though hell if I'll say it's made me a good writer. Plus, it's fun.

Finally, addressing your first point, I don't think I've ever left Board 8. I tried in December '04, but that didn't work too well. Before you knew it, it was contest season, and I was back and at 'em, probably in full force. I was a pretty terrible addict in the day, wot. But topics keep getting less and less interesting; cool people like Leon and HaRRicH posted less and less, and even the contest started to be less fun.

Then I made a topic about my life on the internet, specifically a person, and after a month of pretty incriminating "updates," she actually found it. It wasn't pleasant. She also tends to stalk me when I'm online, so she might be reading this topic right now. In any case, I've started to post less because I ... er, don't like to make myself too easy to stalk.

I'm still here almost all the time. My post count is still pretty high, but my posting rate is a lot lower, and I concentrate most of 'em in a few topics like the fanfic ones and a few board contests that I follow and sorta like. Nonetheless, I've grown a lot less attached to this place and probably could leave if I wanted to do so.

But I don't want to, not when there is still stuff for me to write and people to read it.

How old is Tranny again?

I notice he likes alot of the older users, yet myself who is 24 didnt even get mentioned once in this topic.

Okay, I dont act my age alot of the time, but I've been improving and I dont get upset over character contests anymore.

I agree 100% on the concept of something being overhated. I cannot stand when someone changes their opinion of something due to how "popular" it is. I will like Chrono Trigger no matter how "overrated" it is. same with FF7. I also cannot stand when people think they are unique because they deviate from the norm. Zachnorn is the ultimate example here - his weird opinions seem to empower him, as if he is special for liking something different than board 8. I mean, I don't like Mario or Zelda very much. I don't care for Smash Bros. a whole lot either. does it matter? no. do I have to repeatedly mention it in order to get people to pay attention to how unique I am? hell no. I'll never understand why people shift their interests based on everyone else.

also, your comment about not being much of a gamer reminds me of Bellis. he barely plays games yet feels compelled to write fanfiction up the wazoo. some people just like to write and there's nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't call it "attention whoring". I make lists because I find it to be intrinsically fun, not because I want people to pay attention to me or whatever or because I want to a contributing member of board 8 society or some other nonsense. Smurf cracks me up in this regard - he seems to think that the purpose of being on an internet message board is to gain popularity, like it's a game. that's gotta be the most depressing mindset to have. I would hate sitting here being like "oh man, I wonder how this will affect my popularity." ugh.

anyway, good to see you back. maybe the contest will bring you back more permanently.

I think we've discussed this before. Something similar to this happened to me. After spending a good deal of time on B8, I started liking Chrono Trigger less. It was a combination of many things:

Hearing about and playing many new games
Watching Amanda play through it
and to a much lesser extent, reading about just how generic the characters are. I'd never thought of it cause it was one of my earlier games!

character development was never a big thing to me. I don't find any of CT's characters to be good and I never did. most of all, I find CT to simply be "charming" - it's just fun to play for whatever reason.

I also think that thinking critically on video games is a bad idea. the way I gauge a good game is whether I think it is fun or not. CT is definitely fun to me, so I like it, regardless of what I think of its characters.

same thing with FFX-2 and Disgaea. I find every character in each to be completely awful, yet I like the game.

Magus is all "I AM THE TERROR THAT FLAPS IN THE NIGHT", and Frog is all "HITHER ME THIS SIR". Robo has some personality, but it's mostly confined to conversations with Lucca about how he's a robot or whatever. I do like Magus, but he's definitely the posterchild for the "badass" stereotype.

Yeah, randomness normally gets me, but the person can't be solely random all the time. It's why I never find folks like rexcowbam funny - it's just a steady stream of nonsence. The funniest people I know are the ones that can combine all the different types of humor (wit, puns, situational, etc.) and blend them interchangeably. But that's pretty difficult.

IT CANNOT BE RANDOM IF IT IS USED IN EVERY SINGLE TOPIC LIKE IT WAS IN EARLY 2005

rexcowbam isn't random at all. every post of his has the same level of stupidity. and yeah, you can't just say things for the purpose of being random. my best friend and I often spend 10 minutes discussing things of completely no import at all just because we can. it's my favourite thing in the world about him.

Bed Ellis > Eddy Beddy

And its cool to see some other people here who's main reason for liking a game is because its FUN.

Crono never speaks and all the characters are cliche (though you could argue they weren't when the game came out)? Who cares!

Mario games all have the nearly same stories? Who cares!

"FFTA has no story and is thus a steaming pile of crap". Who cares, it was so fun its the first SRPG I managed to get through from sheer enjoyment!

Such and such game has such a cool story and characters, you HAVE to play it! ... But is it FUN?

This is probably I can't for the life of me make a list of top ten games or characters. I simply like games in all their incarnations, as long as they provide some enjoyment. Sure good gameplay with an interesting story or a cliche story well told is even better, but at the end of the day, when the game isn't taking itself too seriously, am I having fun with it?

(this is arguably why I've binged on SRT:Original Generation these past few weeks. Good game, decent story, but the characters aren't these uber serious stiffs. Aliens are attacking the earth? Sure, fine, we'll fight them, but let's look at girls in bunny costumes first!).

Heh, I could never understand how board 8 can be so analytical & critical on games and more specifically characters. I always found it funny how some people will go on & on about how much they hate a character or how overly cliche they are, and pretty much question how people can like Link, Mario, or fighting characters without having the 'character development' like their RPGs.

Personally I like a lot of VG characters and there's only 1, maybe 2 characters I'd ever associate with the word 'hate', but maybe I'm in the minorty because I don't expect that much out of VG characters.

yeah, finally someone who agrees with me about games. I like Phantasy Star 3 because of the generations system (that and it has the best subtitle ever "Generations of DOOM!" really, how can you hate a game with that awesome subtitle)

People think I say I like the things I like just to be different but thats not true. I really did enjoy Phantasy Star 3, and I even did little voices for the characters as I was going through a dungeon. (I like doing that. Games with voice acting dont let me make up voices! )

and I do like some "popular things" I do like Magus and Vivi, and they are very popular here.

as for me thinking FF7 was over rated, I have thought that since it first came out, it has nothing to do with its popularity here. I just didnt enjoy the game. FF8 was the same way. FF9 I enjoyed enough to play through 3 times.

Chrono Trigger I enjoyed but part of me freaked because it said the world was going to be attacked in 1999 and the whole Y2K thing kind of freaked me out. (Yes I am a wuss. a Chicken Wuss actually)

Also I tend to like games that have lots of characters. I dont care if they dont have a personality, since I like creating personalitys for them.

All in all, part of the reason I like tranny so much is that he is very similar to me. I have alot of respect for you Tranny. ^_^

and well, I probably shouldnt type a giant wall of text here. :P
