*-*-* The Top 50 Users of 2006 (and more!) Part 2 *-*-*

Ed Bellis | Posted 1/3/2007 10:52:27 AM | message detail | #001
(Well, at least in my skewed perspective. But that's not as catchy of a title!)

I wanted to do this ever since Josh's "Best of 2006" topics caught on and I realized I remembered a lot more of the year than I thought. This was my first full year as an integrated member of the Board 8 community, and I've really enjoyed myself - otherwise, why would I keep coming back? As much as people like to moan and complain about the board, there's a lot of good that happened this year, and while of course I can't remember all of it, here's what I do remember, in handy list form!

I compiled this list of 50 users (narrowing it down was not easy) based on the simple question of "Did they make the board a better place to be in 2006?" How I define "better place" is different from how others would, of course, but I tried to capture diverse opinions as well as mine just for the sake of completeness. I don't pretend (apart from in the title >_>) to make this a list representing the entire board as a whole: this is the board as Ed Bellis sees it, plain and simple.

To that end: If you're not on this list, it doesn't mean I hate you or that it's personal or some other bullcrap whining that certain people will likely do. Like I said, it was tough narrowing it down, and it meant a lot of users I really, really like didn't make the cut in favor of some users I don't care for nearly as much. (Like I said, going for a board-as-a-whole approach instead of just are-you-my-friend approach.) If you want to name people who didn't make it, feel free - this is meant to be a topic for reminiscing and having fun, so by all means don't let me by the one to do it all. In summary: DON'T. WHINE. Or I'll get MWIS to put you in the box.

Every ten users or so I'll be posting one of four smaller lists - best topics, best projects, most embarrassing moments and the best things/concepts to come from the board. Like I said, not around for everything, so feel free to list your own memories and such.

This'll... probably take a while and fill up a few topics, so have fun, drink champagne, whatever. It's the new year, Board 8. Party like you mean it! =D

Speaking of which, now that GameFAPs is defunct, would anyone be willing to archive/find a suitable archival site for these topics? I imagine we'll burn through this one at least before we're done at this rate. =)

I'm rather surprised the lolicon stuff wasn't mentioned, even though I didn't pay much attention to the topics themselves. That stuff was all over the board for a while, and both sides were difficult to tolerate. A lot of it was arguing for the sake of arguing and whatnot.

30. Shake
A grizzled old veteran, yes, but certainly not past his prime.

One of the most influential users during the board's "golden days" of 2003, Shake was unable to post for the longest time due to a KOS ban, which meant he was instantly banned whenever he identified himself by name (or, in some cases, even tried to make an account). After Ail sort of... disappeared, Shake was able to return to us once more, and he largely seemed to have given up the large-scale drama-inducing reputation he'd cultivated over the years, instead preferring the persona of almost a "mentor," a dude with a lot of Board 8 experience who tries to nurture both his new projects and those projects of others that he considers exciting and original.

Shake's been one of the biggest movers around the Board 8 Boxing League, one of the most intensive and creative board projects of the year, as well as spearheading a Kana: Little Sister CYOA (multiple times) and a number of other things as well. He's also been instrumental in drumming up a fanbase for MWIS's projects and for praising Smurf's efforts in becoming the most well-known user of the year.

Shake's biggest contribution this year has likely been his personality, though. His "A trip down memory lane" topic definitely shows that he's got a wealth of stories to tell, and that it's likely he'll still have plenty more to share before he's done.

I like how the Nintendrones are proven to be totally shallow voters when they decide to elevate Solid Snake just because he's in a thirty second trailer for their flagship franchise and not because Solid Snake has the most badass characterization of all-time.

29. Ayvuir
Looking out the little guy.

As one of those "on-the-fence" users in terms of popularity, Ayvuir always seemed to be looking out for te underappreciated users. A list of his favorite users often includes some lesser-known gems, and a list of some of those gems often includes him. To this end he also did things that managed to separate him from that class of users who just whine about their popularity by making inventive contests and being an all-around-nice guy - same with BBallman, really.

Ayvuir's biggest "triumph" was likely the creation of the Ultimate User League (UUL), the epitome of "looking out for the little guy," which actually gives lesser-known users a chance to do well. He sadly left the board and yazzy14 took it over, but it was still his baby, and he deserves proper credit for it as well. Shame he's gone - this year especially, with so many new faces in the crowd vying for attention, Ayvuir was definitely a breath of fresh air.
