Okay, if there's one list I'm not too sure about doing, it's this one: The Top 10 Projects of 2006. I am defining a "project" rather broadly - it's essentially any multi-topic endeavor by one or multiple user(s), which can encompass user contests, writing projects, save my topics, recurring topic series, etc. It also encompasses off-site endeavors that relate to Board 8 - webcomics, home-made movies, stats websites, etc. Essentially if it's too big to be contained in one topic or if it's got an expansive nature, it's a project.

So what's the problem? Problem is, with topics, users et al., it's easy to look at and recognize items you're not involved with. With projects, your involvement largely determines your ability to recognize the project's capabilities. It's a lot tougher to recognize the objective merits of a discussion topic about something you have no interest in, or a user contest you didn't sign up for. Thus, I've tried to really look at this as having an impact on the board as a whole. There are some entries on here I'd never put on a list of my own favorite endeavors, but I really can't see any other way to do it.

Once again, the field was tough, so a lot of your favorites likely won't make it. Feel free to reminisce on your own. =P

List up next!

10. NCAA Games Tournament.

The hand-picked successor to Leonhart's epic NCAA Character Tournament in 2005, the games tournament took the same exact format as the previous one, with divisions, inter-division play, and then a tournament of 64 (sort of like USB, from what I gather), except with games instead of characters, which led to a different and, at times, more exciting, dynamic. People seem more able to get behind games than they do characters, for one, and some of the topics got rather heated. Admins swirldude and RPGuy96 ran the contest admirably well, and apart from a bit of controversy near the end with some vote rallying and an administrative response to it, there were virtually no "hitches" - unusual for a contest of its scope. (Final winner? Super Smash Bros. Melee, of course, which remained undefeated the entire season.)

9. Winning Streak!

The concept behind Winning Streak! is simple - two things are pitted together and you vote in which you like more. The winner moves on to defend his/her/its title the next day, when its opponent becomes the thing with the most nominations, and so on. If you want to find out how popular Winning Streak! was (and still is to a large extent), take a look at some of the votals - some of the matches, notably ones involving Stephen Colbert, needed two whole topics. ad00 even had to suspend nominations because of how many people were voting and nominating! Almost everybody on the damn board voted in at least one WInning Streak! match, and a quick glance through the topic shows users from all walks of the board brushing shoulders over even the most inane topic. ff6man started it, PukeInMyPot took it over, and ad00 is currently in charge.

8. Would you hit it if there was a 10% chance you’d get a STD?

Started by Icehawk and currently run by ESY16, WYHIITWA10CYGASTD was one of the most popular recurring topic series this year. The concept is simple: the topic creator posts a reasonably attractive woman asks users the thought-provoking moral dilemma outlined in the topic title: is illusory beauty worth the risk? The topic's popularity in terms of a daily series was surpassed perhaps only by Winning Streak!, and the votals often climbed to near-epic proportions. Ngamer64 was even so kind as to set them up with a website, where all their past exploits can be found. They're currently doing a "Bond girl" theme, so ask yourself: is it worth it?

7. Board 8 Ladder.
http://www.board8wiki.com/Board_8_Ladder

Holy Excalibur's idea for a competitive video game competition was simple: find easily accessible games and post "challenges" for them that would last about week. Most of them were highest score, quickest time, etc. Everyone's scores are ranked and, over time, users can see their aggregate placing on the titular "ladder" ranking everyone's combined abilities. The Ladder got off to a roaring start early in the year, then petered out only to make a quick comeback in the spring... only to peter off again. While the Ladder only had fifteen or so devoted players, the potential behind it and its ability to introduce new games to a legion of gamers (I'm looking at you, Rampage) earn it a spot on the list. Now if somebody would just start it up again...

6. High Ground.
http://www.board8wiki.com/High_ground

A daily topic of Photoshoppic proportions, TheRock1525 would make a topic almost every day during the character contest involving the characters in question and the phrase "It's over, LOSING CHARACTER! WINNING CHARACTER has the high ground!" (A parody from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith). A sprite "confrontation" between the two characters would ensue, and while at first the two character just sort of looked at each other, over time Rock added more dialogue, in-jokes, and geeky Board 8 humor than you could shake a stick at. His Link vs. Jay Solano topic remains the most laughed-at topic I've ever seen on Board 8, with almost every single comment talking about how hilarious it was. High Ground was almost universally beloved.

5. Smurf's Top 500 Board 8 Users.
http://gamefaps.net/gentopic.php?board=8 (all the topics are there)

The most comprehensive ranked list of users to exist in Board 8 history, Smurf's ambitious project to reveal the 500 greatest users in B8 history lasted five topics and resulted in much discussion, reminiscences, and reunions from a lot of older users crawling out of the woodwork. Practically every notable user still with a GameFAQs account (and even some without) showed up to reflect on times past, with hobnobbing and bantering aplenty. Smurf's placing and heavy 2003-centric placing caused some controversy (as well as some blatant inaccuracies about many of the users), but the end result was one of real community, bringing the board, past and present, together.
