4. Most Powerful Fictional Hero.

Contests of all sorts are a dime a dozen on Board 8, but what the Most Powerful Fictional Hero tournament apart from the others was a number of things. First off, the admin, a12340001, produced an outstanding and balanced bracket which led to a number of great matchups. Secondly, many of the voters involved went into great detail with their analyses and logic for voting, which led to some of the most well-organized and compelling arguments on the board all year. From joke matches like Superman vs. Kim Possible to the impossible arguments like Haruhi Suzumiya vs. Lain Iawkura, the tournament was always, always interesting. Its successor, the villains tournament, currently run by smit_massacre, is an admirable successor, but a12340001's initial attempt remains one of the best tournaments ever run on the board.

3. Boxing League.

If you want an in-depth project with an inordinate amount of strategy and planning involved, the Boxing League is right up your alley. Originally Shake's baby and currently PhantomLink's, the Boxing League asks users to create a mock boxer and a "fight plan" for competing against other boxers. The numbers appear daunting at first - and they are, at first! - but the rewards, including the ability to customize your boxer down to very minute details and the satisfaction of success, are vast. Few projects ever give users that much to work with in terms of immersiveness, and the Boxing League definitely delivers on that end.

2. Ultimate User League (UUL).

What Ayvuir (creator) and yazzy14 (current runner) realized about the inherent flaw in most user contests is that there's little room for flexibility - the popular ones blaze through the fodder, and that's that. Yet the UUL posits that there can be another way. Similar to the legendary RPG Dueling League, the UUL places users in different tiers based on their rough level of popularity, and has them compete there; thus, even in the weakest user can hope to win at least one match. The top users move up a tier and the bottom ones move down. It's an absolutely fantastic way of giving even in the little guy his day in the sun. yazzy even insists that people don't just vote in the higher division matchups, insisting on giving the "lower-tiers" their recognition as well. Users who kvetch about not being recognized would sincerely do well to pay attention to and sign up for the UUL - everybody has a chance.

Aaaaand the best project of the year!

1. Board 8 Wiki.
http://www.board8wiki.com/Main_Page

The one-stop repository for pretty much everything Board 8-related, the Board 8 Wiki was originally conceived of by Zachnorn, who sought to get the board more "organized," perhaps in response to the immense success of PotD's Wiki, the PotDPedia. Along with admins SA2Tails, X_Dante_X, and Repus Yortsed, Zach created a Wiki in which, as with Wikipedia proper, anyone could edit or add information. Certain users (first tranny, then others, including myself) would often go on "page-creating sprees," making a slew of user pages at once. charmander6000 added a crap-ton of info about the GameFAQs contests. Others worked on getting up info about Board 8's history.

The Wiki has always been the subject of some controversy, particularly over Zach's policies on editing and vandalism, although some (like Shake) decried its existence in the first place. But there's no denying its usefulness. The Wiki is truly a Board 8 community effort, even when people screw around with it. User profiles, contest records, memories... the Wiki can (and does) capture a lot of what makes the board function well.

Well, that's the list. Like I said, it was hard, and a lot of deserving stuff didn't make it. Feel free to post your own faves and harass me for my choices. It was a good year overall for both creativity persistence on the board, methinks.

Yeah, removing votes based on arbitrary criteria is bad enough. But further, posting the match on this board as "FF7 vs ____" and then being unhappy when people click on the topic and vote?

FFT match.

And it's always fairer to have a rule for removing votes than just going "oh, I don't recognize this name, your vote doesn't count." Especially when during the tournament, we received higher votals, some of which coming from regular Board 8 lurkers that I would have just thrown out as part of the rally efforts.

As a thanks to Bellis for his efforts, I have decided to critique his review (some thanks >_>).

-First off, the intro is a little boring, anyone who has heard of the game pretty much knows this, next time you should try and find a way to say something different, something that will grab the readers attention.

-For gameplay, there is pretty much no way more boring to go about describing the gameplay than to go about it button by button. Instant turn-off. About the only time I think it's not completely boring to go about what the controls are, is if you are describing some of the special Wii actions (which you did, in that case, I thought the descriptions were good), or if the controls do something very different from the norm of its genre. For example, if I write a Gears review, I may quickly mention how well it works to have the reload button on the right shoulder.button, instead of sticking with the standard Halo X for reload that most FPS have stuck with.

-When you aren't going about the controls button by button, I think you do a good job, like talking about the Wii controls being overly sensitive at times.

-However, the review also doesn't flow particularly well. You start the gameplay off by doing the button by button thing, then you have a paragraph about some control problems, then you go right back to button to button. I don't know, it felt weird to me.

-Once again, I started liking the review a lot more once I got past the button to button stuff. However, you could have gone into more detail on some occasions. I would've liked an example of one of the obnoxious "puzzle" boss fights for example.

-One of the problems with going by Ceej's little review scheme, is that it doesn't work well for various games. If I were you I wouldn't have wasted as much time on the irrelevent story section.

-The graphics/sound is pretty good. Although IMO you should pay a little more attention to graphics and less to sound.

-Overall, it's a lot better than most of the crap GameFAQs reviews, it's well written, and I feel like you did a good job backing up your position on the game. I just think you should work on making the read itself a bit more interesting somehow, and on making it flow better. You really should consider doing essay style reviews. They give you a lot more freedom, and you won't always feel compelled to waste too much space on story or sound.

Oh wow, that was unexpected! Thanks for the feedback. =)

Yeah, it's the first review I wrote and nobody had anything to say at the Peer Critique board (well, only one person said anything at all). I guess you're right about the format not really working for everything. I suppose I wrote the review from the perspective of a college essay, trying to explain everything and making sure everything I said was backed up. Next review I write I'll try to take that into account. Valuable feedback, thanks!

Yeah. Don't put it up as a match for the public if you don't want it to be a public match. My vote was thrown out and I had actually participated from time to time in the NCAA contest. It was a sad ending for what could've been an awesome project otherwise.

Very, very true. Having my vote tossed simply because I hadn't voted in the previous matches, because I was in class? Horrible ending to an otherwise solid project. Though they said there was a method to their madness, throwing on regular posters votes made no sense whatsoever in my eyes.

20. Tom Bombadil
Best Evangelion fanboy on the board.

We've reached the top 20, and we're reaching the tops of every "class" on the board, one of which is the "average" user class. These are users who don't go out of their way to do bizarre, attention-seeking things or projects, users who always rate just below the upper echelons of popularity. Tombolo is one of the best of these users.

Always entertaining to read, Tom was infamous this year (and last) for his rants about Evangelion and his ability to start up numerous creative user contests, only to let them fall by the wayside. He's one of those users that seems to be everywhere at once, and he always has the ability to say something witty and/or engaging. In terms of being a great casual user, Tombolo was one of the best.
