Best New Fad: New fads are so screwed.
This innocuous little phrase was one of the best and most pointed satires of the stats topic and the board in general during a contest - namely, people's tendencies to call a match after the first five or so minutes of the poll. Karma Hunter should be given credit for it, and now whenever somebody (who gets the joke, at least) says something like Cloud is so screwed, it's a witty way of subtly commenting on either their rash conclusions or their poor argumentative skills.

Best Off-Site Fad: Drawball.
The Drawball craze at the beginning of the year quite literally swept the entire board into a frenzy. A massive "ball" where anyone could paint and draw, the Drawball was overtaken by a massive Korean flag, and Board 8ers Explicit Content (who was axed for rallying for it), FFDragon and Kosmo Trainer, among others, organized a massive rally to paint a LUEshi over the flag. The task proved more daunting than expected (they're Koreans, after all), and soon our cause was joined by not just LUE and RI but also by other boards like 4chan and YTMND. It was a massive off-site rivalry, one that we were at the very epicenter of.

Weird Obsession of the Year: Ariel!
I never thought there was such a thing as an "Ariel fanboy," but as voltch's Disney contests proved, such is most definitely the case. yoblazer led the charge for all the (mostly male) fans of The Little Mermaid to proudly proclaim their love of Disney's most sultry aquatic lady. Forget Monster, Okami, or even OBJECTION! - Ariel was where the real interest was.

Finally, two events: The Two Best Things to Happen on Board 8 All Year.

2. "Kat Pager: CrystalMoon."
Okay, it didn't happen on Board 8 exactly, but we were almost as involved as PotD was!

Moderator KatThePoet (who almost never posts) essentially made a topic forcefully requesting the presence of one CrystalMoon, known to all as "Ail," the main reason (besides Shake, of course) for the Board 8/Poll of the Day rivalry. Everyone soon got wind of this wacky happening and pretty soon both boards were posting freely in the rapidly-rising topic - which had, by this point, become a sticky. A crapload of mods were also posting, leading many to believe that Ail had done something pretty durn bad and that she was gonna get punished for it.

Throughout the topic, posters on both boards began to realize that there was no real reason for animosity - we both detested Ail! Furthermore, nobody from Board 8 was getting modded for invasion, which meant that none of the mods seemed to care - which, of course, meant that Ail seemed to be the only one who did. The topic got to 500 abruptly and then a second one also exploded well into the night. After that triumphant day and Ail's subsequent demodding, the war between the boards seem to have finally ended.

And The Best Thing to Happen to Board 8 in 2006 is...

1. "Thanks, Bison": The 2006 Character Contest.
That above phrase and the story therein seems to sum up the joys of the 2006 character contest. Everyone on the board seemed incredibly pessimistic about the contest in general, both before the specifics were announced (many wanted another games contest) and after (the awfulness of the split-gender bracket). Yet what resulted was one of the best contests yet - for a number of reasons.

First, the exclusion of Clinkeroth and Mario, despite much whining to the contrary, led to a wonderful amount of upsets, especially among the Noble Nine. Never before had the five non-Clinkerothio N9 members been free to run around without running into someone stronger, and many "unthinkables" happened: Sonic beat Crono. Snake beat Sonic and almost beat Samus, who struggled to beat Tifa (yay, Zero Suit!). Snake himself was a force of nature, sweeping the bracket by storm and destroying everything in his path, even up to the Battle Royale, where he outlasted Samus, Mario, and even Sephiroth. That doesn't even take into account all the other random upsets and little treats - Sub-Zero over Chief, Luigi's run, Ganon/Vincent... even Gordon Freeman winning a match seemed to signify that things were changing, and that they were changing for the better.

Lastly, and most importantly, this contest was the first time Ceej ever truly acknowledged us a legitimate board. We have always been the ugly stepchild to LUE, or just a place Ceej has to deal with to put on contests that he doesn't always seem to care for. But this year the almighty admin actually seemed to listen to us. A lot of good matchups this year were talked about by the stats topic (Kirby/Luigi/Zero, MC/Subby). During the contest, well aware of our outry last year, Ceej actually came to us to ask for our help in finding a good Kerrigan pic - and we responded. Then there was Ceej actually joking around with us - the "Thanks, Bison" topics with MYC definitely showed us a CJayC who recognized our sense of humor and was able to laugh with us.

And then, of course, there was Link vs. Jay Solano. The ultimate snub to Board 8 was Solano's exclusion from the tournament - he had to have known all the work people had put into getting him in, and the claim that Jay didn't have enough nominations is absolute bullcrap. Yet Ceej actually swallowed his pride and, just for Board 8, gave us our own special poll with Jay Solano. It's a treat he normally reserves for boards like LUE and other "real boards." Ceej even thanked us for being one of the better boards to lurk on. It was, in essence, the best validation we've ever had as a board, and it remains the shining event in 2006.

10. yazzy14
Best new user of the year.

Though right now he's known primarily as "the dude who runs the Ultimate User League," yazzy has shown that he has the makings to be one of the best users this board has to offer. yazzy's dedication to the UUL and his continual presence and bumping of many topics have shown him to exhibit a care of lesser-known users. Although he's participated in practically every contest this year, yazzy has never once whined or moaned about anything in said contests; rather, he contributes actively to them through bumping, discussion, and support.

yazzy is the prime example of how to get noticed in a good way on Board 8 - through being a good-hearted, calm, and rational dude. yazzy has been one of the best people to talk to this past year for this reason. Most new users know this - it's time for the vets to figure this out as well.

9. Heroic Mario
The best at what he does.

There's really no other way to describe our beloved Aitch Emm, a user whose legend often threatens to envelop his actual personality. HM is the most incorrigible fanboy on the board, and this year he (at least in the latter half of the year) fell for Twilight Princess; he thus, as HM is liable to do, became the best and most listened-to (and most trusted) source for TP info and hype. HM's "gaming news" were on overdrive this year as well - as always, he was the most reliable source for up-to-date info from E3 and many other places, to the degree of even getting a special tag for gaming news ([gn]) implemented across the board. That takes a lot of respect to manage.

No HM year is complete without lists of all kinds - his top ten list of characters was one of the biggest and most-read wall-of-text emporiums all year. Who else but Heroic Mario can write two full posts on the depth of Ken Masters? And who else but Heroic Mario would receive such adulation and readership for it?

The board just isn't complete without Heroic Mario. His sudden shifts in taste, hard work and sheer earnestness would always earn him a place near the top of the list. There's nobody quite like Heroic Mario.

Well, just to add on to what HM did this year.

-He always adds excitement to the contests with his outlandish predictions. The whole Star Ocean over Pokemon thing brought meaning to a meaningless match, it's little stuff like that, that makes him the best.
-The account bet. I know you aren't a big fan of it... but everyone else on the board was, and this is about who made the board a "better place".
-Who didn't enjoy poking fun at his obsessions for TP and Nina Fortner, among others, this year?
-He's probably the most down to Earth user on the board, who doesn't get caught up in all the drama crap. Gotta count for something.
